I didn't notice any pacing issues at all until a friend complained to me about it. I didn't have any issues with the ending, but it depends

It's not bad and worth it. I found it hard about middle of the series, but it picks up in the latter 1/3 well. Sanderson finishes strong.

Also, I started in the 90s but quit halfway through. Restarted with the audio books, which was easier to listen to than read.

The books are like that, too. Tens of chapters of introductions to characters then they all die. Next book is tens of chapters of new intros

Nah ASOIF starts slow, speeds up in Clash, peaks in Swords and then slows down again in AFFC/ADWD in preparation for Winds of Winter.
