DeSantis is utterly untrustworthy. What funding will be provided to hold the classes? Where will the space in the kids' schedule come from?
Lemmingofdarkestnight
I'll assume it's Republican finance and leans heavily on gofundme and not getting sick.

"it's your fault your poor, here's a bullshit HS class."
faultysage
So math?

And we should. This is posturing. Financial literacy won't get you out of poverty.
ath1337e
This is probably a good thing actually as long as schools have the resources to teach financial literacy.
How is this nice? I'm not against it, but no amount of financial literacy is going to get folks out of poverty. Get rid of the GOP for that
chefsoda
Sounds nice, but they were careful to not allow any budget or remove other requirements for it, so it's just campaign optics, not reality
Hogwaller
He's a dick, but it is badly needed. Oh - that doesn't make him not a dick, because he's a dick.
Seethreepeeoh
The "we're gonna do fuck all about capitalism fucking ruining you, so we're going to frame it as your fault" starter pack.
RCButler
It definitely sounds like a way to push Republican 'economics' disguised as something useful - curriculum brought to you by PragerU.
Lomish
Now to ban all the proposed textbooks for this class...
Krossis
I can see this being used as a "you can't graduate because you don't know math" thing due to them banning so many math books
Rhewin
Ok… and what extra funding will he provide for that? What books have been banned that they can’t read anyway?
ProChoiceBaby
"Work hard and love it and make others (me) billionaires" - Republican finance
ProppaGanda
Ah, capitalist propaganda: the school subject! Can we get a class on traditional family values too?
theoriginalpopehentai
Based DeSantis continuing to be Based.

Yeah, this is nice and all, but I don't exactly trust it considering that they've banned math textbooks for somehow including CRT
SpartaWolf117
Finally something good coming out of florida
cosinewave
Ha!
Sorry, it's a trick. There's no budget alotted for any of it, or any other requirements removed, so it's just optics
Even so, it's a good requirement. If schools have to cut some electives to make sure kids are financially literate, that's ok.
It's not & they can't. Unfunded mandates are illegal & are get removed as they go forward. It's a way to look good to voters, but do nothing
DeSantis had bragged about trying to collapse the school system, just as Rufo has with the "anti-CRT" movement
GarmBlack
Except, and here's thebthing..the thing... if math classes were better funded, literacy rates were higher, and critical thinking was lauded
Not punished, by Republicans, a class specifically on this wouldn't be necessary.
crapybarra
Sure it would. Just bc you read Faulkner, crush calc & know not to eat lead paint doesn't mean youre prepped for compounding interest.
GrosseSouris
I excelled at math. When I got out of college, I was completely fucked financially. My credit didn't get above 600 until I was almost 30.
EverNotRelevant
Math and finance are two different beasts. Math is a language, and finance is how to lie in it.
electronicbovine
Depends what sort of finances it covers. Many financial instruments are dependent on worldly things outside the realms of pure math.
