Cordyceps fungus
The zombifying fungus from The Last of Us is based on a real organism. The Cordyceps fungus infests insects and other small creatures, and consumes them alive.
Here it is beginning to devour a tarantula.
It has even been known to control its victims behavior, causing ants to climb to locations optimal for the fungus before they die.
