They seem to come in two flavors, lately: The ones you described. And the others, whose balls are bigger than their brains. The healthy middle ground seems to be rarely in charge of anything meaningful.

It is such a shame that I won't live to see the practical applications of many of them.

Don't feel too bad. There will be drastically fewer people for generations to come thanks to the collapse of several Earth systems, so even if humanity can somehow apply this newfound knowledge, relatively few people will be around and eligible to enjoy them. That should cheer you up! /s
