Declutter to improve mood

life_hacks

... okay so my germophobic butt who doesn't even think a tooth brush dropped that has been washed and bleach is safe to use again would have that Lois declutter reaction

As a new parent, this concept has recently become extremely literal.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I essentially inherited a lovely pink blue and cream Persian style rug when my grandfather passed, and it had a cigarette burn and some stains or two. Over the years I've spilled coffee on it and the cat puked on it here and there. But two nights ago my dog had stress shits from a bad storm, right on the rug. It's time for it to go now!

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This really depends on the material rather than the object's intrinsic value.

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

This just means that soft or fabric covered things are getting thrown away more often

2 years ago | Likes 90 Dislikes 2

Not necessarily. Washing machines exist.

2 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 0

HELP! I'M OUT OF TOILET PAPER!

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The major issue I see with this is that it would mean you can never have any food in your house

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

As a former nurse, you wouldn't believe how many people we would have thrown away if we hadn't cleaned up the shit..

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Lmao tiktoker 🪲 🚬

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

it is true: since throwing Marie Condo away, all is fine and balance is restored....

At least he got rid of the noose as well I guess.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

True. At least he isn't an arsonist though. They just stop at the "does it spark" part.

2 years ago | Likes 33 Dislikes 1

Pretty sure they still want the joy part. More of like a 'does it spark? joy'.

2 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

This box ... sparks joy, I'll keep it!

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

That's good, but I used "Have I used it or needed it in the last year? Am I going to use it tomorrow? No to both? Garbage."

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

My poop phobia means whatever it is it's instantly in the trash

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My way is the insurance payout method: if you were filling in a (fictional) insurance form for this item's loss, would you want a cash payout or the exact item replaced?

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'd throw away everything I own and half of my family.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

"If the house burned down tomorrow, would you bother to replace this?"

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

I'm sorry, but there are a lot of things I would throw away instead of washing. Like if there was poop on my bamboo cutting board. It would be done. Ashes to ashes, trash to trash.
What a strange method of decluttering.

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

I think better applies to items that aren't food/health related that haven't been used in a while and is considered "clutter" by some.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Thank you.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Ok all my toilet paper is gone... What now?

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I like this one because it forces you to only keep irreplaceable things.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Everything already has poop on it the only thing that varies is the degree to which that is true.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Naruhodo. (Japanese for "I see.")

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The sparking joy test is entirely dependent on feeling joy, so that one is right out for me

2 years ago | Likes 84 Dislikes 4

You say that… but your least favorite person’s favorite shirt.. and a serendipitous opportunity to provide the poop.. I’m betting you - albeit in protest - will find joy in the following cost/benefit analysis. Best done at the end of the fecal year, for accounting poopeses. It’s a veritable shite-off.

Things it doesn't work for: A book I like. A pair of pants I am ambivalent about. A boomerang.

2 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 1

You might like the book, but would you be able to wash the poop off? If not, could you order a new copy that does not have poop on it?

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah; if I got poop on a book I liked I'd be sad but I'd want to replace it. If I got poop on pants I didn't much like I'd still hose them off and run them through the wash. And if I got poop on a boomerang? ...I don't know. I'd probably set it down gently outside, wash my hands and other relevant body parts, and take some time to think about how I'd come to be in that situation.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Gotta do correct order of operations with the boomerang.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Holy crap that's funny!

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

If the pants fit, I'm hosing them down outside and solo washing them. And I read public library books.

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

You are a sensible person and I'm proud to know you. Thank you for not pooping on the books, also. Good choice. I'll follow suit.

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

No I just mean I usually wash my hands after reading. I assume some asshole has read them on the shitter.

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

A safe assumption. This asshole just read your comment on the shitter.

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Sparking joy is a stupid test, plenty of stuff is useful/practical to have that doesn't spark joy.

2 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 1

I think that actually is the rest of the stuff she gets you keep, iirc, but I will never forgive her for what she told me to do to my filing system...

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Which was…?

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Basically it's just throw as much stuff as possible out and then you don't even need to file it, since you'll have such a small stack of papers. It did not work.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Sparking joy is the part of the method that became most well known but she actually does address practical necessity items differently.

2 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

My toilet doesn't spark joy. Better get rid of it!

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

That's just silly. Not having a toilet would make me very unhappy, as proven the one time it was broken. Having a toilet sparks joy.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Guess I’m keeping my butt plug.

You probably want to check the batteries are in correctly then

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Sure does! It has several vibration settings!

2 years ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 0

It's all fun and games until things get stuck...in the on position

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Ngl, i learned the importance of flared bases the hard way. Had to deal with a running vibe in my colon for almost an hour before I finally worked it out.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

If it’s sparking because of the vibration you might want to check the wiring

2 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

As a motor tech, I would say that if it’s sparking due to the vibration I would also be worried that the motor windings are grounding out against the stainless steel housing.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You uh....got a name? Could use some fun right now.

2 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

Nah, it’s just some cheap one I found on Amazon. I checked and it’s listed as ‘currently unavailable’.

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

It's obviously currently unavailable because it's currently in your butt.

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Damn, did you have to buy ALL of them?

2 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

If you've ever owned dogs or children, chances are half your stuff has ended up with poop, puke, piss, and/or blood anyway. It's a fact of life.

If a kid shits its pants, can toss? Yes or no?

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Or you can get all that after a fun time in the bedroom.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I was just thinking of the accident my dog has had.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That’s what you get for letting them drive

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

One of my dogs pooped on my other dog today 😭😅

2 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 0

So did you wash it or throw away?

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Well, did you wash the child/dog off or throw them away?

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

And cats. Jfc the hairballs. But I love their fuzzy faces so much!

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Cats too--we've had plenty of possessions pooped, peed, barfed, or drooled on by our cats over the years.

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Yeah that's his point if you are willing to wash poop off of something it has some value to you.......

If you are not willing to wash shit off of something do you really need it in the first place.

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I think the point being made here is that the bar of "wash poop off" becomes a very very low barrier. Like is it something I'm about to eat? No? I'll wash the poop off it. Not is this something I no longer really need. I'll just wash it because you just wash poop off things and get on with your day.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Don't forget the snot! Lots of snot.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I have/had elderly cats with IBS.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

One of my kids puked on the dog, which frightened the dog so much that it ran down the hallway and under a bed while smearing puke on the walls, carpet, & underside of the bed in it's haste to escape the violent spray of warm chunky liquid. The dog also pooped in shoes on occasion. Anyway, yes, it's a fact of life.

2 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

Blood is fine

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Don't forget slobber. Everything I own has been slobbered on

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I have a Great Dane. No joke, there's slobber on my 10' ceilings.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I have two great Danes

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Ha, so you get it. Those full-body shakes are lethal at both ends, ha.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Actually, as someone who has a young child, deciding what to clean and what to throw away is something I have had to do multiple times. While it is a good general rule for decluttering, it's not perfect. If I get poop on a book, it's probably going in the trash no matter how much I want it. There's just no cleaning that. And if it's an article of clothing, it's going in the wash even if I don't care about it and could do without.

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Yea, I've got dogs, cats, pigs, snakes, tarantulas, lizards, geckos, frogs, I don't think I should ever turn a blacklight on in this house...

I don't have children but have enough niece and nephews to feel this very much

2 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Is this an advert for not having children?

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

It should be, because that is absoluty what it is like.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Idk if I'm cold and uncaring, but I laughed very hard at that, thank you.

2 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

I’m a really loving and warm father and I busted a gut watching this about five times.

2 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Having children? Seems like a problem I'm too trans to have :P

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 9

Trans people can have children

2 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

O.o I think my silly tone was not picked up on. At all. Oh well, not my problem lol

Leased is fancy speak for rent to own

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

I mean the value drops the moment you drive a kid off the lot

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Wait. Only for cars I guess.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Nope, anything can be lease to own. and car leases are not to own unless explicitly stated as such. Else it is just a 2 year lease (most common)
