Not too many music recommendations in imgur, so here's some. This is obviously not an exhaustive list, just some of my favourites and classics. If your favourite isn't on the list it's probably because I haven't heard it (enough).
Recommend me, bitch!

There's two songs for each artist, mainly from different albums, and also some additional recommendations if you dig it.
First recommendation is that you give the songs a chance. Some (parts) you only learn to like after multiple listens. Some of the songs are very long and complex, while also awe-inspiring in their ambition. Imagine playing these songs live!

I put all these to an open spotify list here: spotify:user:deansledgehammer:playlist:5AYQsm9OgUKDdMN2Rdc2v5
You can and should add your recommendations to it, but please only add few songs per artist at one time.

You've probably heard Tom Sawyer, but I'll start with it anyway. It's approachable. And a good ice breaker to Geddy Lee's weird voice.

spicepoet

Le Parc https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bkCGtyZLaOk</a> and Legend https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LfOWehvvuo0 are two faves i come back to.

GreatPineappleWarSurvivor

+1 for Knights of Cydonia and Rush

dancfontaine

Those are the two I listening to lol. +1 for +1

anonymousdoctorsinspace

There is so much going on in the Knights of cydonia video.

MemeAccountant

Agh! That dark side of the moon prism is so incorrect it hurts! Why! WHY!!! As a physicist, I am dying a little inside. Good list though. +1

webeb

This, this should be the top comment.

iMemeYouNoHarm

Pre-Phil Collins era Genesis FTW

LeonCheng

Good you got porcupine tree, I would add Steve Wilson + most of his collaborative works (Blackfield). Katatonia, Mogwai, LunaticSoul

IMissedTheBoatOnAGoodUsername

I'm disappointed by the lack of porcupine tree/Steven Wilson love in this comment section. Expected more. Great fuckin music.

equatebrand

I'm disappointed that the only song OP posted was Time Flies.

icametodrinkmilk

Slappa da base man

siler7

No Marillion? No Genesis? I normally don't bitch about leaving stuff out of these lists, but come on, dude.

IFUCKEVERYTHING

No Magma?

Never heard of them. What songs / records would you recommend?

MrSpindles

Recently picked up Marillion again, forgotten how great they were when dusting off their albums.

Marillion with Fish was the greatest band ever. And I don't say that lightly, having been a HUGE Genesis fan first. Favorite songs?

THEONEANDONLYJOHNstamos

What about Genesis- The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway?

GuinnessSteve

Upvote for Rush. They got me through some shit.

CommanderCaribou

Same bro. Test for echo was my fallback from reality

cakeandtea

Me too, but with the later signals album mostly.

billyhoyle13

You had me at Lady Fantasy. Holy balls in a sack that's an amazing song

MetaphysicalPotato

As far as Tull, My favorite albums are Thick as a brick, and Heavy Horses. Oh, and you seem to have forgotten the Moody Blues.

apotatochip

Got to see Rush this past June. I can die happy knowing I saw Xanadu played live!

ExperimentKraj

So you're saying you stood within the pleasure dome decreed by Kubla Khan?

yes and tasted my bitter triumph as a mad immortal man!

NEVER MORE SHALL YOU RETURN? ESCAPE THESE CAVES OF ICE?!?!?!

FOR I HAVE DINED ON HONEYDEW AND DRUNK THE MILK OF PARADISE!!!!

Wombatfisher

OFFFFFF PARADIIIIISE!!!!

TooBadSheWontLiveButThenAgainWhoDoes

Tangerine Dream recommendations: Invisible Limits, Ricochet (parts 1 and 2), Cloudburst Flight, Kiew Mission, Madrigal Meridian.

SassySailor

Talking Drum by King Crimson.

PantherLady

Dude, your worst transgression with this list is skipping Gabriel era Genesis. Lamb Lies Down..., Selling England...

Guess he just has to make a part 2. =)

Jaimir

Missing Genesis and including Muse... Even the Mars Volta should have a spot

Ornateelephant

You sir, beat me to making this comment

RanceMuhammitz

I would say from Trespass to Lamb are all great prog albums

LtheGreatest

Yes Genesis! Thank you!

MyFartsHitMyBalls

+1 for Selling England. Dancing With the Moonlight Knight is just amazing every time.

BiteyMcChomp

Firth of Fifth does it from me every time!

HeyItsHerrTrigger

dat banks solo

That whole album is a better sing along than any Disney movie.

sodoffusillygit

Checked for King Crimson, was not disappointed.

iamcatbugg

No love for some mars volta? Cicatriz esp and roulette dares are good songs.

gfhum

Where is Emmerson, Lake and Palmer?

And where is Soft Machine?

wyatt8740

They missed Procol Harum, too.

I'd hope it would be in the part 2. there is almost too many goodies to mention.

whatsupfussycat

Gentle Giant is a must, Yezda Urfa for the Americans

jlake9

You should check out YES Tales of Topographic Oceans, Great tunes for an escape from reality.

VognerCharking

Porcupine Tree has some huge songs, much better than Time Flies which rips off Pink Floyd's Animals. Anesthetize and Russia On Ice are great

Truth. And if he was going for accessible, Trains > Time Flies.

svenneve

Kansas?

BenSwol0

No Gentle Giant?

DecibelGhost

No Godspeed You! Black Emperor?

ultrasoundscape

Post rock, not progressive rock.

Ehhhh fair enough

yagamiisgod

Rush will always be my favorite band

Quick! Favorite song of theirs?

YYZ. I never get tired of it

I'm the same with Subdivisions. I love it.

Also a good one

Love Signals. Chemistry, The analog kid. love it all.

patrickthepink

Focus also did a track called Sylvia which is well worth listening to.

FrancoUnAmerican

Can someone explain waht is progressive music, i think there a lot of it in completely different music types.

mytola

"Classical music performed by modern instruments" is quite a good definition, I think. Not entirely accurate, but it's the essence of it.

Snarkoleptic

Progressive is almost like a mindset, where complexity, ambition in scope and concept are regarded as an artistic goal. It's very variable.

Technically superiour musical nerds essentially

As a music nerd... Yeah

todayayoungmanonacidrealized

No Zappa? Shaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaame, Shaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaame mate. Needs Zappa.

Needs many others too, I'll do pt.2 if this gets somewhere.

Zappa isn't prog.

He most certainly was. Not on every song, but you gonna say RDNZL, or even Peaches en Regalia isnt prog? Zappa was everything.
