Any ideas why this cavity was poured into my foundation? The house was built mid 1920-30. 1.5 story cape cod style home in the Midwest. I'm stumped why they would take the trouble to do this.

Banana for scale

Absolutely nothing coming in or out pipes,wires, etc. The space measures approximately 12"x12"x10".

Either it's an old coal chute that was bricked off on the outside, or there was a storage container there like a safe.

You can still see the lines where it was framed it. So I don't think the coal chute idea would work. I would support the storage container. Like a safe!
