Could you please make posts on possible scenarios if Trump does what he promises? I think we all could use your expertise and it could help us prep. If you can stand to do it. 🙏🙏🙏
I found this neat trick to deal with the cognitive and mental exhaustion of reality. When there are 2 or more outcomes, pick the absolute worst one and that will probably be the one that happens. The election? What’s the worst outcome? Republicans capture the Senate, House and Presidency. Guess what happened? Climate change: COP29 is happening and they’re begging countries to take it seriously. Worst outcome? They won’t, so that is probably what’s going to happen.
I'm not a civics teacher but it's left me exhausted as well. I've slept a couple extra hours every night since the election results and I'm still exhausted. I guess stress just takes a huge toll on the body.
To be fair, the sentence "I am a XXX XXXX XXX XXXX .... this election and the results have me exhausted". I'm exhausted to - I think (and hope) we all are. That's the F'ing problem. Even now, half the fucking posts on imgur are about the election, or trump, or "eat the rich", or fuck Elon, or whatever the soup-de-sur happens to be. It's like you're cutting yourself and bitching about the blood. Can we go back to silly and funny now?
We had a "participation in government" class, rather than "civics" when I was in high school. It was taught by the most extreme right-wing teacher in the school. I'm pretty sure that she deliberately gave poor grades to the students arguing left-wing arguments.
As hard as it is to stare at that electoral map I can't fathom what Wednesday morning was like having to face your students after talking about the gaffs and mishaps Trump has made all election.
I would imagine after this, a TON of government and economics teachers, and lawyers will quit, since the rules and facts just kinda got yeeted out of the window.
I see it as fortunate I was in a High School US History class before the 2000 election, i think my teacher back then would be slamming his face into the white board every day for 90 minutes were he still teaching that class today.
Wait… I was in 8th grade in 2002. I remember my civics teacher (shout out Mr. Beeson). I think I learned stuff …. It was a weird moment post 9/11 when America briefly felt really united.
So do ya explain how the red scare bs has caused the majority of americans to have zero clue wtf communism/socialism is or are we still teaching the shit that just caused your exhaustion?
Thank God. My state tried to eliminate everything except the "three r's, reading riting and rithmatic" and no, it's not one of those shitty southern states.
I have a semi-related question. I know another high school level teacher in Singapore, and her semi-public observation is that the current generation of students tend to be more self-centered than millennials who typically have an ethos of trying to improve the world. What's your observation?
Perhaps they have seen how Millennials in general have received little but heartache for their attempts and found the proper course to be checking out.
Honestly, I don't know. I see a mix of both. We have self-absorbed teens glued to Snapchat, but then we have kids concerned about the world. We also have many that are a mix of both.
We all gotta do what makes us happy but being safe from an economy that constantly tries to ruin us is a different kind of happiness. I don't love my job but for the effort and the comfort it brings to my family, i tolerate it. Would rather be a full time dungeon master. Naughty or dice!

Go to bed, kind teacher. You'll need to be well-rested for what comes next.

Thank you.

The average republican couldn't pass an 8th grade civics final. I can't imagine teaching this shit and then talking to idiots about the election.
"China is going to pay the tariffs and that is going to make the grocery and gas prices go down" - millions of people who are too fucking stupid.

The debate with Kamala will age like the ones with Hillary. Our country is full of cretinous scumbags who cannot listen to smart women.

She would have been worse than Biden was and I say this as a feminist
DVSBSTrD
You're wrong and you're not a feminist.

People shouldn't be able to vote unless they've passed a federal civics test.

yup, I guess i am..

On the plus side you have a clear demonstration of how not learning about history results in shit like this.

I’m an ESL teacher. I don’t know what will happen to my students and their families. Just taking one day at a time.

Well, now the curriculum is going to include chemtrails and gay frogs. But you can't say "gay".

I would expect the baseline exhaustion level for a high school civics and government teacher in the US to already be pretty high....

Yeah, I bet so. 2000 was a mess and then a year later 9/11
systemfrown
Well if ~8th grade civics teachers and students had both been doing their jobs 18 years ago and more ago we might not be in this situation, would we?

You mean you were a High School Civics and Government Teacher in the US....
GuysJustWannaFish
Your school still teaches civics? Wow can I get an autograph, you must be the last one!

That`s what I was going to say! Civics has long been gone from the classroom in my state.
secretagentchewbacca
My state requires AP Gov or Civics to graduate

Well keep your resume polished. Your profession (teaching) is likely on trumps list of political enemies
mycatsings
Didn`t Trump promise to abolish the Department of Education?
secretagentchewbacca
Most of education happens at the state level
autocorrectfailures
And while you're at it. Maybe explain to kids what a president does and how one can possibly influence the price of eggs without waving a magic wand.
autocorrectfailures
And then explain how democracies hand over the keys to authoritarians like in Russia and *digs out the long list of countries*
mycatsings
Trump will just announce that egg prices are cheaper without any proof and the crowds will cheer.
secretagentchewbacca
Already have and will continue to. Any POTUS gets too much praise and blame for the economy.
secretagentchewbacca
Will do. I've considered leaving the profession. Sadly, I live my job but it doesn't pay well
