I’ve got one of these and 12 or so disks for it, mine might be older as it has a coil spring rather than a drum and the crank is on the outside and it has 12 bells that play along to the comb of the music box. These played by dropping 5 cents in a slot and winding up the clockwork. They were popular in hotel lobbies and places their lack of volume made them a better choice than a player piano. The fanciest Polyphon was like a jukebox that it would change the disk and had a choice of 6-10 songs.
The disc is made of cold wrought iron which is toxic to the Fairies trapped in the machine. If they don't play pleasi g music the disc will continue to harm them so they play for their very lives.
The hammers are on the machine side. They look like a fine toothed metal comb, and each time a bump from the back of the wheel passes over the comb, it flicks a metal tooth so that the tooth springs back like "boioioiiing!" But each tooth is cut to a specific size so the "boing" is a different note. That's why the bumps on the wheel are at different heights, to flick each note at the right time.

Tabs are punched out of the disc, they stick out on the back and pull little hammers back to thwack a note. Just like little windup music boxes

I assume it's the metal plate you can see at the very beginning which contains the little hammers. That makes sense.
