methylmercury was used in the past as a fungicide for grain, but has the obvious side-effect of making the grain toxic for consumption. Grains would be shipped to areas with famine and the recipients might try eating the grain rather than plant it. Dyes help to mark the poison grain.

Great question! My very brief Googling indicates that the methyl-mercury remains on the initial seed coat an the early root system but it does not translate to the resulting harvest, leaving the crop safe for consumption.
