Why isn't this man the U.S. president?

Triple his security

There is no threat here to capitalism. Just compete. That's what you claim to do right?

2 months ago | Likes 25 Dislikes 2

Me: skeptical this first try works out (grocery margins are notoriously low, can't squeeze blood from a stone)
Also, me: Don't buy out the private infrastructure owners. Build government owned networks, drive them into the dirt, and then buy their capital at fire-sale prices when you've undercut them.

Weird that its the £radical left lunatics£ that are actually taking care of people. WEird.

2 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

now if only our administration would follow this example instead of take it as a threat.

2 months ago | Likes 34 Dislikes 2

I don't expect this from the current administration, but I wish that Democrats ran on this. They'd win by a landslide. But no, they're still going to pretend that it can't be done.

2 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

The only thing this administration needs to do is go fuck itself straight to hell

Stupidest fucking way to feed people in NYC. This problem doesn't get solved by putting a supermarket in fucking Hunts Point.

2 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 4

No one said this will solve the problem? Just that it’s something that’s likely to help, and if it’s successful can be relatively easily expanded.

FFS stop expecting perfection out the gate

2 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

They're going to spend $30mm on the harlem location before the doors open. It's a sparkly bit of bullshit that could instead feed a TON of people.

2 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 6

Why are they taking away my right to starve

2 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

And I think the goal is to sell the food at cost. So the city won't profiting from sales. Which is intended to keep food prices lower. I THINK...

2 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Now do this across the board. Every industry, every commercial good and service, every utility especially internet. No socialism, just have government owned non-profit alternatives for everything, run just like the USPS. And when the capitalists cry, tell them it's up to them to compete in the open market.

2 months ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 6

Gods, wish we had a progressive like Mamdani running in California. Our most progressive candidate is a billionaire. The rest are a bunch of larping neoliberals.

2 months ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

You're telling me the 16ish people running for LA mayor none are socialist? SMH what are the requirements of running for mayor that socialists can't manage?

2 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Yeah, but at least y'all have a massive budget deficit while spending billions on free healthcare for illegals and also fighting the federal government to keep issuing CDLs to illegals.

2 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 5

The sound bite nugget that everybody parrots is that California's economy is larger than a lot of countries .. but they stop there. They never realize that if you remove Hollywood's elite that just hoard money, and silicon valley billionaires, suddenly California's poor as fuck and massively overpriced.
(Sauce: born and raised, first 30 years of life spent there)

That isn't to say, however, that I don't still love California and miss it everyday.

the fact that some people are against this guy on matters of policy is so flagrantly revelatory to the overwhelming degree that state propaganda has suffused the sociopolitical imagination of the US citizenry. fucking disgusting.

2 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

These are typically not sustainable, others have tried, but they fail for legitimate reasons, but I wish him the best and hope he figures out how to actually make that work.

2 months ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 5

It's ok for it to operate at a loss. The goal is to feed people, not make a profit. Presumably.

2 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Do you have an example of where you think they've failed because a quick search just turn up people saying "this'll be just like the Soviet Union" which seems to me like an unhelpful comparison.

2 months ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 2

Communaly owned cooperative stores have existed here for more than a century, and today approximately half of all grocery stores are such. They are competing on the market without subsidies and manage fine. If anything they act as a guard against price hikes or monopolies. Not sure how the NY shops will work, but this is a proven and functioning concept. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kooperativa_Förbundet

2 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Yes, it's just like another poster said, it's the difference between can do and will do. We all know it can be done, but will do is a whole different story.

Agree. Potential is unlimited. Action, unfortunately, is selective.

He hasn't gotten shit done and isn't improving lives. These stores are going to be hives of theft and robbery until they're forced to close.

This may come as a shock, but it's entirely possible to lean right and not support that piece of shit. Although in this case, being against Mamdani and communism in general is more about having common sense than leaning right.

It’s the richest city in the world, but the US isn’t even in the top 5 richest countries.

2 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 18

Yes it is, more GDP than the the ranks 2,3, and 4 combined. https://www.worldometers.info/gdp/gdp-by-country/

2 months ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 1

Measure the GDP per capita. Also, US debt is now 123% of GDP. A first since WWII. https://gfmag.com/data/richest-countries-in-the-world/

2 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 4

Yes, you are right with this measure. As a whole, the US is the richest, but the individual/average/median wealth is abysmal, together with a wealth Gini index of more than 0.80, meaning the huge total wealth is distributed extremely asymmetric.

2 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

That is very wrong

2 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Per capita GDP, it’s number 8, as of the end of 2025.

2 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 5

You are judging by the citizens in the country and their total wealth but you mentioned wealth as a country. As a country, the US is the richest economy/country since the 60s. If you want to be pedantic that’s ok but if we are being pedantic, let’s stay on the original pedantry of your claim.

2 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

A country is a country because of its citizens. It wouldn’t have a GDP without them. Per person GDP is the fairest way to judge the wealth of a nation. But since the original post doesn’t mention how they calculated it, I’m using my methodology. You can use whatever metric you want. Like the number of racist, self righteous assholes. The U.S. is waaaay out in front.

2 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 6

You can use your methodology, just make sure it matches what you’re claiming. Technically we are both correct but you’re connecting the wrong things. If you say the US is not the richest country, that’s not the case, it is the richest country, if you said its people are are not the richest you are correct, they are the 8th richest.

2 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

But.....how does this funnel money directly from poor people into the pockets of billionaires? Does this guy even know how to politician?

2 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Not saying it WILL go this way, but here's an opportunity for fuckery: "the City, will select experienced, third-party grocery operator(s) through a competitive procurement process."
https://edc.nyc/program/nyc-groceries

2 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

That's the kind of situation where the winning bidder can only increase profit by cutting services and payroll. If it were up to me, I would create a nonprofit to to run the stores and hire experienced talent to administer. Then I would hire people from the community to run the stores themselves and pay those community members some of these $30/hr min wages they talked about.

If his policies *work* and are *sustainable* he will do fine. Right now the rich in NYC (and US) are flush with stock market cash and so is NYC. If a crash happens his policies will become unaffordable. He is already unpopular with bodegas in the area of the shops - those are family run immigrant businesses.

2 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That is also the reason why companies don't build new production plants here in the US. They are always just 1 midnight truth away from not needing to spend hundreds of millions and years planning.

I would love for us yo get more people like this guy, but living here and watching everything that’s going on…? I’m thinking things are about to start SERIOUSLY hurting over here… Like, Great Depression levels of pain.

My wife and I have no kids and both work in STEM fields and are definitely feeling it. The average American is already suffering, and it’s just getting worse… What do we expect from someone who bankrupted casinos?

Republicans (and too many democrats) seem hellbent on making sure this quote rings true: “As democracy is perfected, the office of president represents, more and more closely, the inner soul of the people. On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron.” -H.L. Mencken

I am just gonna say this: this is socialism. This is directly against capitalism, where stores can set what prices they want and only compete with other stores. I am not saying this is bad, I am just saying that this is an anti-capitalist policy. But some of those are good for you, now do free universal healthcare.

2 months ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 4

Almost Nothing is free. You mean state funded healthcare. Still a bargain compared to today.

2 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I have less knowledge about economics than almost any other field besides like, aerospace engineering I guess, so this is a legit and dumb question. Don't they just compete with the city store like normal? I don't mean prices per se but like, to get people to go there. They already compete for people to come when there's food banks, restaurants, buffets, cookouts, free food pantries, etc - like, they already have to make people choose to shop there. How is this different than a discount

2 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I am a computer science major, but real laws that enact social change would force local grocery stores to donate expired food to food banks, shelters. Not this. This is goverment creating competition. I am not against this, but for reasons like you said it will be a goverment store competing against privately owned enterprises. To be truly successful this store would have to sell goods at cost, and then make loss on expired goods / theft. Or even on rent costs, security costs, utilities, personnel

2 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

grocery store moving in? Is it because the government can reduce the prices lower? But any store could do that with promotions and subsidies and there's already people giving away free food, so it seems like not a huge distinction. Anyway I love the idea and people need to eat more than Whole Foods needs another 25 trillion dollar profit. I just probably truly don't understand economic competition lol. Anyone willing to explain to a STEM-and-art type person, go right ahead

2 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

No it’s not, this is a basic social safety net.

2 months ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 5

Hm, no. You can do a social safety net without a publicly owned retail stores, most nations do. This is pretty much 1:1 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Handelsorganisation Now, whether that's good or bad is a completely different question. Personally I'm do not consider 'socialism' to be a dirty word unlike so many US-ians.

2 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

the united states are not the richest country in the world and haven't been for a while.

2 months ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 5

No one deserves to go hungry, regardless of GDP.

2 months ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

By what metric? If you're measuring GDP, the US is by far the richest. China is about 10 trillion behind.

2 months ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

That's per capita. The post was not saying the American people are the richest. It's saying the US is the richest.

GDP by Country (2026) - Worldometer https://share.google/QvBpBXRV0SQnDgkJM

2 months ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

When that GDP goes to the unsatiable greed at the top while the bottom 60 suffer, it is arguably the shittiest metric ever.

2 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 6

I mean yeah. That's the point of the post. We have a huge GDP and the people aren't getting enough of it. We live in the richest country ever that could give all of it's citizens amazing lives, but chooses not to. Mamdani is hopefully going to lead the change there.

2 months ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

You're SO CLOSE to understanding what is going on. Damn, it is like you are almost there.

2 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

If i missed a point, maybe you could explain it instead of whatever this is?

2 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah, and the point is that the money is there, we just don't tax the motherfuckers properly. The US could have ABSURDLY high standards of living, and it's utterly bonkers that the gigabillionaires don't understand that their businesses will actually thrive even more with happy workers, generally speaking.

2 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

FEEDING PEOPLE? That sounds like socialism!

I'd put a /s on the end there, but it does sound like socialism in addition to sounding FREAKIN AWESOME!

2 months ago | Likes 286 Dislikes 1

Noone else said it but I will, no the socialism is when you ask why they have no food.

2 months ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

From just this it sounds like back when the UK had council housing. It isn't free, but it sets a bar for affordability and quality, ensuring a minimum option for people, while forcing competition to exceed on quality or compete on price. That system worked marvelously, until conservatives created rules designed to destroy it.

So, yeah! Pretty awesome!

THIS IS SOMEHOW THE FAULT OF IMMIGRANTS!! *rabble rabble rabble*

2 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

That isn’t socialism, it’s a basic social safety net.

2 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 4

No. Publicly owned grocery stores are pretty explicitly socialism. The fact it’s also a basic safety net should really make you question whether “socialism” is really such a bad thing.

2 months ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Oh, we’re well aware that socialism is the way to shift the balance of power toward labour. I’m just concerned that, because these stores would be government owned, it would be dictated by said government rather than allowing the folks running the shop to do that. Doubt Mamdani would, though there is some concern, as he has reinstated the policy of police terrorizing homeless communities and hasn’t done anything to rein them in. The lack of action on the shutdowns of trans care isn’t a good /1

2 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

/2 look either. We also need to be concerned about whoever succeeds Mamdani to. The man can’t be governor forever.

2 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

It isn't socialism, but it is socially responsible.

2 months ago | Likes 34 Dislikes 7

A publicly owned grocery store is very much socialism.

2 months ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 3

The comment is about feeding people, not grocery stores.

2 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

No way they’re feeding people with a grocery store. That would be socialism.

2 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 3

The comment I responded to was about feeding people.

Plus, publicly owned grocery stores, as described in the article, are not socialist. The policy aligns more with a social democracy as it isn't about the state taking control, but rather providing a service.

2 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

No, it absolutely is explicitly socialism. So many people have knee-jerk reactions to saying something isnt socialism that when a very obvious and very clear example appears they simply say "that isnt socialism but it is socially responsible". There isnt anything more socialist than public ownership of essential goods and services.

2 months ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 2

Just to be a tool, I'd disagree on "isn't anything more socialist" and say maybe something slightly more socialist would be if the means of production like the farms, storage, and transportation of the goods were also publicly or at least cooperatively owned. But, I do agree with the rest of everything you've said, and it's a good and valid point to call out when things are socialism in a good way. Reclaim the term.

2 months ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

The comment is about feeding people, not publicly owned grocery stores. Feeding people is not socialism.

Additionally, something being publicly owned is not inherently socialist. The post office is publicly owned, for example. Socialism does build on the idea of public ownership; however, publicly owned stores exactly as described in the article is a policy aligned with a social democracy as it is designed to feed people in need, not extend the control of the state.
