This kid, Riley Howell knocked down an active shooter in his anthropology class at University North Carolina. Although he was killed in the process, along with another student, he possibly saved more lives. He was in ROTC and wished to join the military after college.
There is a petition to provide full honors and military burial for his actions. This kid deserves the salute for his actions and trying to keep our world safe.

How about gun control petition instead
gabriel90512
John 15:13 No one has greater love than this, that one should lay down his life for his friends. This guy is a true hero
Imakemyownbeeranddrinkit
Can you correct the post? Its' University of North Carolina at Charlotte - different university than UNC. Thanks for posting the petition!
superfails3000
How about passing some gun control laws, then you would not need so many heros over there
UnderratedCommentFinder
A lot of ass hurt here about what this hero kid deserves. Maybe just be cool and give him military funeral, it doesn't detract from vets?
Outbreaker
Just to clarify, it was the University of North Carolina Charlotte. A lot of people are mixing it up with UNC chapel hill
jabike2424
you're the closest to getting the name correct. capitalize "The".... So angry this happened. Good job Riley
pancakemix710
Went to high school with him and idk how to even think about what happened
IncognitoPanda
"Along with another student", sucks to be him.
thekirk
Other student was not "moving to the sound of the guns", as the phrase goes. Riley Howell was, and deserves recognition and respect for that
reineseele
First guy who does the heroic catch a bullet thing wins...
MalcontentTroll
Deserves a salute? yes. Deserving of honor YES. Deserving a funeral with full military honors? -NO , why?because he wasn't IN the military.
stickspics
**University of North Carolina Charlotte
ChicanoBatman
My fault. Was noted in news. I try to get the facts straight and hustled on posting. Apologize for that. CB
jabike2424
The story of Riley is more important than getting the school exact. But as a former 49er thank you.
NobodyIsMe79
Thank you! I was about to say the same thing. Very different schools.
Idontlikeolives
Okay he doesnt deserve full military honors. Even someone who did 19 years and four deployments doesnt get full honors. At most he would
Idontlikeolives
Get two guys folding a flag. But not even that, because the honors is mostly about the flag not the individual. This is a dumb petition.
bigggblack
Imagine if he had a gun... you think he would have maybe survived to tell this story? Maybe a few more survivors to help tell his story too
AllTheCoolKidsPeeTheirPants
Maybe, but I still vote a big no to allowing students to have guns on campus.
bigggblack
There’s a better alternative...
AllTheCoolKidsPeeTheirPants
I’m quite shocked that the downvotes indicates that people think guns at school is a good idea...
pandro
That brings us back to "when guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns." The shooter is definitely disobeying the rule.

Fuck you Janusha. You're always willing to pounce on a pile of bodies to say how much you hate America. Miserable cunt.

PulpyOJ
Please change “UNC” to UNC Charlotte, UNC-C, or University of North Carolina at Charlotte. UNC by itself refers to UNC Chapel Hill.
Imakemyownbeeranddrinkit
Two of those are correct, but not UNC-C
PulpyOJ
Why
Imakemyownbeeranddrinkit
Anything with a hyphen is not a recognized name of the school. Large publicity campaign for it back in the 80s.
Imakemyownbeeranddrinkit
If you ask me, they just need to change the name of the school to "University of Charlotte" - this name confusion happens all too often.

You can buy quickclot powder and bandages at walmart. I have them in all of my first aid kits.
cpnbeeb
Seems I recall quickclot got recalled a while ago. Or at least frowned upon for causing unnecessary damage.
PlanePineapple
It's like fix-a-flat. It works great in an emergency to get you someplace for repairs, but cleaning it out can be annoying as hell.
itsallabunchoflies
Commercial quickclot is good for superficial wounds, but you'd need cellulose to pour into a bullet wound. Good shit, just not ideal here.
PlanePineapple
They sell military grade quickclot bandages at walmart. I have them as backup for the Israeli bandages I have.
itsallabunchoflies
"Military grade" means nothing. I have a business I've built on appropriately gearing, training, and helping people with disaster solutions.
igivetheinternets
The Quickclot bandages are not frowned upon though and you can also buy Celox if that is your concern
PlanePineapple
(1) They're the same shit I used in Iraq when I earned my combat medical badge motherfucker, ok? I'm telling you it's the same shit I had
Swedishbouldering
He is a hero and deserves a heros burial but why a military one if he wasn't active or veteran? Blurring the lines a bit there.
Datalink
ROTC is Reserve Officer Training Corps. It means he was starting his training to be an officer in the military while attending college.

The US flag that adorns a Veterans’ casket is EARNED. Like rank, flying wings, a tab, a Trident, or an award. He earned a hero’s goodbye. 1/
ChicanoBatman
As OP, with military family galore yet never served personally, I was on the fence. Your comment is best validated on subject. Thxs
BeerBugs
Thank you. Having a flag on my casket was a motivator in me serving. A small one, but still a motivator. Only one way to earn one of those.
BeerBugs
He did NOT earn a military funeral. As a Vet, I would go to honor this hero, and pay my respects. He doesn’t rate a military funeral.
StarrryNight
Except he did more to protect Americans at home than those who died needlessly in Afghanistan and Iraq did.
BeerBugs
Says who? That the politicians at home undermined the military doesn’t negate the effort or capabilities or the military. We fought w 1 arm.

Srirachachachachachachachacha
Dam, that's heavy
Godholio
Was he under contract yet? That’s the only question IMO.
Carrickin
While being under contract allows the army certain legal options regarding your future, it does not make you a member of the military. 1/x
Godholio
As an AFROTC cadet->officer, I'm familiar...but 90% of the time (AF at least) they match (POC/contract) and there's a character limit here.
Carrickin
No worries. As a cadet I didn’t understand all of this. You’ll get it more once you can contrast being an officer with your current exp.
Godholio
Damn character limits. I understand it just fine. Commissioned 2004. AFROTC contracts incur IRR service; not UCMJ-able, but still military.
Carrickin
The exception is service academy cadets (West Point, Annapolis, AF Academy) where they subject to uniform code of military justice (UCMJ)2/x
Carrickin
Which is the system of law members of the military are subject to. ROTC cadets are not until they graduate and receive a commission 3/x

School shootings in USA are no longer newsworthy as they happen every few weeks
ChuckNorrisAteMySock
A couple days ago in North Carolina. Not reported on as much since it was small. Thanks to this guy.
TheNameIsHarryDresdenWizardConjureByItAtYourOwnRisk
2 dead, 4(?) injured. Also, I saw a lot of decent coverage of it, dunno what you guys all are reading/watching
yzark01
How bad has it got where a school shooting isnt reported on because its 'only small'
susansbutthole
It was widely reported on. Don’t create some bullshit narrative out of your ignorance.
yzark01
The fact that you guys have more school shootings a year than all western countries combined isnt a bullshit narrative.
susansbutthole
That’s wasn’t what you were saying. You were saying this wasn’t reported on. It was widely reported on.
igivetheinternets
There are lots of shootings the media doesn't report on because it doesn't fit the narrative
DisgruntledFerret
Whenever I see folks making smug remarks about "the narrative", it just makes me sigh.
Wolfshead009
Would you prefer "Agenda"? "Bias"? Whatever you call it, it does exist.
Dentistman
Why the fuck is it common to even have school shootings?? What the fuck america!?
SilentStrangeness
"Man dies saves classmates from shooter; two dead" doesn't grab as much media attention as "Twenty-nine dead from recent school shooting".
yzark01
And you dont see the fact that even a small school shooting as headlone news is even remotely alarming?
W92Baj
Which is kinda their point.

That's not how you spell mental disorder without access to mental healthcare providers. It's a small symptom of a MUCH bigger problem.

I'm not saying you are wrong, but there was a guy in Japan who tried to do a mass stabbing at a School.

You can deter a stabby guy with a long stick, or throw shit. They’ve actually got tridenty things for this purpose, sasumata, I think.

If it was just one thing that made them make the choice. it would be easy to stop. Unfortunately it's multiple factors and not always same

OmegaKamidake
My school didn't require any specific haircut for their ROTC, but they only got like 5 people wanting to join so they took whatever
ittibittybooey
Your college or your high school? They're two different programs.
Mercenarity
That's way more liberal than JROTC policy.
Zarital
Same, mine just wanted short hair or very well maintained long hair (tight pony tails or such). I had long hair while in ROTC.
serpentinebaboo
You’re talking about JROTC or college ROTC?
Zarital
JROTC for Highschool (We just called it ROTC to feel big). I'm not decided if I want to join my college's ROTC.
ittibittybooey
Yeah, JROTC is nothing like ROTC. ROTC actually commissions officers, they wouldn't let you have long hair in any program.

The ROTC program where I'm at does not require you to shave your head. You can have hair as long as it is maintained (neat and clean)
