I can say I saw station a single pair of stations advertising 6.79 Saturday morning. Then that evening 6.89 for diesel. Want to know the worst part. This was a day trip I had gone on. I also saw stations along the way as low as 6.19. Then as high as 7.09, at stations that are big enough for truckers. People in the car were like fuck shits going to get more expensive. 156 gallons x $7 = $1092....

Petrol will easily be over 100€ in my Prius (<12 gallon tank) and diesel over 150€ in my Volvo (<18 gallon tank). And that's normal passenger cars. A 200 gallon tank for a long haul passengerbus would be over 2,000$ here even at the cheapest discount gasstations.

I would say put solar panels on the boxes but I have also seen those same boxes get absolutely wrecked by incompetent drivers so I don't think companies would spring for the idea.

I did some quick math, and under ideal conditions, a solar panel that large would generate the equivalent of ~0.5 gallons of diesel fuel in energy per hour. So it would take ~400 hours of ideal sunlight to "fill the tank." They'd be moving one tank's range every month or two (but probably longer).

Are we talking the total fuel energy? Cause diesel engines are, at best, 50% efficient with fuel. And for solar we are talking about 20w per sq foot. 9Kwh per hour (though with frames and such I would say more like 7) and if it is about 5 peak sun hours per day would be 28Kwh per day. Which for a smaller truck is about 10% of its range. I don't think it will replace charging stations at all but an extra 10% range is nothing to sneeze at either. That is like 40km (depending on the area and sun)

Sadly equipment cost is an issue too. I've seen companies look at completely swapping out entire battery banks because even 1 hour of downtime on a truck is too much. Having to basically turn themselves into a utility company to charge all the trucks. Despite everything, you can pump ~1,500 miles into a tank in ~4 minutes but you can only charge ~50% in 30 minutes. That means even using best case paper-numbers from liars ~1.5h of charging to go the same distance as a diesel truck. 1/?

I know several Lefty, old school punk and metal guys who drive trucks (as well as Black men and women who also long haul) and, like many of us including me, voted against this at every step and still got this situation. Truckers are not a monolith and their unions are doing them wrong if voting against their own best interests is advocated.
