I know a lot of people think Lawrence was special needs as a nod to McCarthy's Morons, but personally I think he was trying to wash out. You can't beat a disability out of someone like they did with the sock party and he never used the soft simple voice with Hartman, only on Joker. Whenever Hartman physically punished him he never made that mistake/tried that tactic again. He gave up on insubordination after being choked, never mixed left and right after being slapped etc

That one scene was probably 37 takes because other actors kept laughing. In boot camp there’s always that couple of dudes who can’t help but laugh when the drill instructor is saying some wild shit, even after they’ve been beaten repeatedly for doing so or the rest of the platoon has been punished in their place. A kid laughed once and the DI asked which bunk was his, and SCREAMED that he was going to come back that night to “have sex with your face” and my tongue bled, I bit it so hard.

The best one in my opinion were when a drill would just be straight diggin into someone and then ask them a question at which point trainee would say some wild ass funny as hell (for the circumstance) shit and you could tell the drill wanted to just loose it laughing but they never broke.
