I'm addressing them saying they don't get it. My point is that doesn't matter. They don't need to get it. That's like me saying i don't know how gay guys are gay. Being gay isn't for me, so I don't need to get it. Saying I don't get why someone else likes something I don't just feels like unnecessary negativity. Not a big deal though. Just an observation.

I think the main difference between the two, and why I hate Seinfeld but love IASIP is the fact that one show kept rewarding its characters for being shit people, while the other sees the shit people get their comeuppance every episode.

I never really thought of Seinfeld as being in the same vein that’s really interesting. But yeah totally different vibe. Sunny is one of the funniest shows ever because everyone around the characters is disgusted by their behaviour and that’s a big part of what makes it work

Seinfeld characters lost shit all the time for their antics. George managed to bullshit his way up, but it would eventually reach a head and he'd get called out. Jerry constantly lost relationships. Kramer coasted and regularly gave himself health problems or got banned from things. Elaine rarely got her bull and scams to work. They don't seem put out by the end of an episode because, even though they always sniped at each other, the four of them had each other's backs when they were needed.

Don't forget they were always barely hanging on too. Each time one comes across some sum of money, it's always immediatly lost. I say almost because one time Kraemer got to keep his horse racing winnings. But then he's right back to doing anything but working for money.

That's not true, it's like... Way the opposite of it. They never really got anything *extra* and got to keep it because they need to be in generally the same point that they started at for short story arcs, to make writing the show easier.
But none of them were really struggling at any point. They all more or less had successful careers through the show, except Kramer who was wealthy enough from receiving a bunch of money from something or another to the point he didn't need a regular job.

There's an entire TVTrope for this, "Seinfeld Is Unfunny". One reason Seinfeld can seem unfunny is because the show pioneered so many tropes that we've seen used in other media since, that now, watching the original is unfunny. Similarly, Fritz Lang's _M_ isn't very suspenseful to modern audiences because it pioneered a lot of suspense tropes that were reused as early as the '50s by Alfred Hitchcock.

Seinfeld's stand-up was never amazing, but people have forgotten (judging by these comments) the impact that show had. The absurd nihilism, the unlikeable protagonists surrounded by even worse background & supporting characters, the utter lack of sentiment or emotional lessons: all these things were pioneered and popularized by Seinfeld (the show). The modern comedy has been so influenced by it it's like the Mt Fuji of the genre. And he deserves some credit for co-creating it with Larry David

Very true. The first season of Seinfeld was kind of lousy, actually. I'm really surprised that it got picked up for a 2nd season. Good thing for Larry David and Jerry Seinfeld, that the writing improved. It was still not great, but was improving. It started to hit its stride by the 3rd season and then gradually took off from there. The last season had 35 million viewers! That's top tier. "Jerry Seinfeld is not a funny show?" 😄😂🤣🤪

Seinfeld was good for its time but it has not aged well. Its successor in Curb your Enthusiasm it better in every way. Seinfeld as a comic is the most milk toast person and material possible, and with his ego he tries to enforce is stale standards onto others. This man would blackball people for swearing in their sets opening for him.

Funny thing happened: after Matthew Perry died outtakes and bloopers of the show started showing up online and the actors themselves - particularly Perry and Matt Leblanc - are actually drop dead funny when they're goofing off and adlibbing, but when they follow the script? Meh. Just another dumb sitcom with a laugh track

Yup, this. Plus there is at least a balance of characters who are trying to be less shitty, even if misguided. And the humor is just better. Friends and Seinfeld aren't organic story jokes. They are stiff formats to push us to the next catchphrase or expression on loop. "Joey makes this face. People love this face. We have to write around ways of being able to get him to make this face!" At least when Philadelphia does it, they put in some effort to put the same joke in a different skin.

It's not really a show that works well in clip form. As you would lose most of the joke set-ups. As the show's style, will spend large parts of an episode just to setting up a later joke. But in clip form you would likely only see the pay-off but none of the setup. So naturally the jokes will land flat.

A major difference is the number of writers - UK comedy usually has one or two writers for every episode, US has a team with each person responsible for a character so the comedy is often pulled in different directions

I've never heard of US writer teams being responsible for a character. In Seinfeld's case, the writing team would often throw general ideas around together and then write full episodes by themselves, which were all retooled by Jerry Seinfeld and Larry David
