I hate Nazis

Just re-watched "The Sound of Music," which - despite its historical inaccuracies regarding the von Trapp story - is still a heartwarming film with a good message about "fuck Nazis."

I spent years in Austria in the '70s, and became painfully aware that the country - as beautiful as it is - was still full of people who applauded the Anschluß and wished the Third Reich had prevailed. And that was rather terrifying.

Sadly, the Nazis are with us again. Many people have written blogs and op-eds and dissertations about how this has come to pass. In my own mind, the rise of Republican autocracy and Christian Nationalism began with Nixon, and flowered under Reagan and pundits and politicians like William F. Buckley, Jr., Newt Gingrich. and Rush Limbaugh. The elimination of the Fairness Doctrine in 1987, and the Citizens United decision in 2010 (just as evil as Dred Scott, if you ask me) basically nailed shut the lid of the coffin on Democracy. It's been struggling to get out and is not entirely dead, witness the adminstrations of Barack Obama and Joseph Biden, but it is moribund at the moment and in severe danger of decease.

If America does not pull out all the stops this November to flip both houses of Congress, the republic which Ben Franklin and his colleagues gave us at the Constitutional Congress will have died an ignominious death.

For the love of all that you consider holy or of worth, fight until your last breath to make sure the fascists and the oligarchs do not prevail during the midterm elections. Trump is doing everything he can to jigger the election; only massive turnout in favor of Democracy will thwart him and his ultra-wealthy handlers.
