Today's harvest. I'll turn this into a kickass salsa (except the potatoes.) Each ingredient but the salt, pepper, garlic, and apples come from our yard.
Edit: Oh wow! This is the first time I've made the front page. If this was skydiving I'd owe a case of beer. What do I do now? ?
Our pond. Koi with fake crane and owl to discourage predators from eating our fish.
Carrots, ready to be thinned. Orange and purple.
Green onions here, red onions next bed over. Sweet potatoes further down. The Jerusalem artichokes didn't work, so we're doing a deep dive on what went wrong. :(

Not everything is edible. My wife made this for me because she knows I miss the desert, living as I do in Florida. I got to explain "Paige NO" to a neighbor yesterday with these beauties.

Developing figs. I love to use these to explain the "God Hates Figs" stories in the New Testament. (So unfair to the fig tree!)
A bud of a mango. I never knew I loved mango until I had fresh mango right off the tree, still warm from the sun. Even the skin is tender and tasty.
Even the spices for the salsa are home grown. Here's a sprig of oregano. Florida has a tough time growing garlic, but we're working on it.

My biggest issue is the squirrels and birds and raccoons and deer and fire ants and...living on a rural plot is nice, but it does make a small garden kind of difficult to maintain.

Put your garlic in the freezer for a few weeks prior to planting it and you may have better results. It needs a cold period to develop into a head with cloves rather than just one giant one. Great looking garden!

You may already know this, just sharing in case others stumble on your post. There is some heat tolerant garlic that has been successfully grown in FL according to a friend of mine, specifically check out the Creole varieties. "Aja Rojo" was the one my friend grew.

Matthew 21 and Mark 11 describe Jesus walking up to an out-of-season fig tree. Finding no fruit, he curses it and it immediately/next day withers and dies. Some claim Westboro Baptist Church messed up by a single vowel, since Jesus didn't curse any gay folk but definitely zapped a fig tree. Thus, "God Hates Figs."
Next Bible lesson: Numbers 22, "Balaam and the Shockingly Loquacious Donkey." Yeah, I'm fun at parties.

Living in an attic apartment (decent quality, but still an attic), no chance I'll be able to do this anytime soon, but perhaps I can get a nice corner in the plot of land my sister just got her hands on. Ofc, I'd first need to manage to not kill plants in my care....

I am full of envy. I'm in a zone 7a region and my seedlings are just getting ready to be transplanted outside - but I've only got a 17" x 4.5" balcony to grow on.

Jerusalem artichokes/sunchokes are daylength-sensitive, so you might need varieties that are better adapted to lower latitudes. Also if you have streetlights or an exterior light on, that could prevent them from setting tubers.

Do the fake birds work? I've seen some neighbors with fake owls and it doesn't seem to bother the pigeons and crows we have here.

All I know is that fake crows do nothing to deter pigeons. They quickly figure out that they never seem to move and are harmless.

Yeah, that's what I've seen too, but I don't currently have a yard or anything where birds would bother me.
I've also seen something like a kite in the shape of a falcon tied to the end of what looks like a fishing rod. The breeze makes it fly and I wonder if that would work better... As I said in another comment, just making plans for my future veg garden.

I put a fake owl in my yard last year to keep the birds from popping on my car, and yeah it works. I took it down cause I missed the birds

Cool, I was wondering... As I said, doesn't seem to bother the pigeons (I saw one the other day perched on a neighbor's fake owl).
I'm still a couple of years away from being able to properly build my yard/veg garden, but I'll keep it in mind!

actually this slaps. I use peaches, mango, or apples depending on what's in season. The sweetness and spices at a lot to it!
