Pets may appear to be asleep, but if you noisily go out the front door and then sneak up on them through the back door and go "BOO!" you can expect them to jump right out of their skin. They have an uncanny ability to keep track of who else is in the house with them.

I have two dogs yet when they do this it sounds like an entire pack of wolves. I am usually only next door. They know this. I’ve taken to not wearing shoes when I leave so they know I’m not going far. Still have to come@back and tell them I’m just a walk away every half an hour

My then recently adopted chihuahua (she was dumped) was out snoring away while we (and my min pin mix) were house sitting my parents' house. I went to water the garden and left her in the house to rest. My min pin and my parents' corgi were being really fussy about the backdoor, so I opened it up and my chi was howling because she thought I too abandoned her 😭 that point on, I had a doggy satchel for her so she could snooze while I worked the garden.

My current dog doesn't seem to understand if either of her parents are crying, she's not acting NY different, but my ex GFs dog would be a perfect emotional support dog for anyone. Ex GF was awful for my mental health but I loved that dog to bits. Originally a street dog, she was the smartest, most empathetical and most cunning dog I've ever known. I see she's turned 13 now, and grown very grey in her face. I would love to cuddle her one last time. Man, now I got sad.

Pretty much any social animal will display empathy, even rats. Dogs are extremely social and are correspondingly empathetic towards those they've bonded with. Whether they'll display empathy towards those outside of their "pack" depends largely on social factors and genetic predisposition.

Dog upstairs in my apartment complex does this from 6:45 a.m. when his people leave until whenever they get back. If you're leaving your pup alone, keep some enrichment activities around for them please.

Same thing was happening with our neighbor. I felt so bad for that pup as it was the entire day. Left a note and the neighbor came down and I offered to help. They resolved it and said he had become super attached during Covid and now they had gone back to the office.

My parents' dog will do this for approximately 5 minutes after they leave and then go back to bed after she realizes they are actually gone. I've heard it when she doesn't realize I'm visiting and up in my old bedroom. She also does this if you go into the front yard without her, even if she can still see you. Or just whenever she thinks her people aren't in their correct place in the house.

Please let them know it’s still happening and it’s every time they leave. Emphasize your concern for the dog’s distress (vs. your own), and they may be more receptive. Maybe even record it and play it for them.
