The Pact Was Made
I made a deal with God- help me get a good job and I'll pay part of it to charity.
Long story short, I got a very good job. Whether or not some benevolent deity heard me, I intend to follow through on the pact.
Need advice on reliable charities/persons in legitimate need to donate 10% of my pay to. Not trying to virtue signal here, just would appreciate advice.
Mike808
https://www.kiva.org/ is awesome as you can pinpoint EXACTLY who do you help and for what. You also get updates on their goals being reached
oneduringwanderer
+1 for being a thoughtful human. Is there a specific cause or region you're interested in supporting?
belly42
What country are you in? There may be a register of charities with info as to their financials. In Canada, the CRA publishes each 1/
belly42
registed charitiy's financials (how much spent on salaries, fundraising, etc.) Personally, I've donated to MSF and a few local charities.2/2
Ludus
Go local - usually your town's city chamber or council will have meetings that discuss how they will distribution of funds and you can learn
Ludus
which do something you care about, have directors/board members you find you can trust or are held accountable
Venfolnir
Medecins sans Frontieres would've been my choice.
jfoobar
I donate $40 a paycheck to two charities, evenly split. One charity changes every year or two but the other one is always MSF.
wheeeeeeeeeeee
Food bank, 95%+ makes it into the people in need.
coothlesscthulhu
A local food bank was a main source of food at one point in life. I donate cash and pre-rona would volunteer to help onsite. Def. worth it
binaryspike
I like the local impact food banks have! The people who work there might know of "competing" services too so you can diversify.
PaulTomblin
And cash donations go 4-6 times as far as food donations because they can get deals.

Doctors Without Borders

And the guys that are running wiki
ValkyrieDoot
Not PETA. Fuck PETA
ImurevJourhein
No, my goal is to actually provide a net *gain* to the world around me. Peta can shrivel up and wither to dust.
TheWatermill
People for the Eating of Tasty Animals?
Lledargo
I donate to Wikimedia foundation, ACLU, a local museum, and a couple of local shelters. I find groups that have already had results 1/
Lledargo
That I'd like to support. E.g wiki already runs a great website, ACLU already defends civil liberties. Where as race for the cure has not 2/
Lledargo
Made progress in cancer research. So I tend to avoid donating to them.3/3
parkydiver
I mean, it depends on what you may have passions for. My great uncle is blind and a guide dog makes his life a LOT easier. That could be an>
parkydiver
option for one in your country. But after the last couple years, I feel like there are plenty relying on local food banks for essentials too
penzick
Agree. There are SO many good causes in the world. From guide dogs to battered women's shelters, from hunger relief to clean oceans. They're
penzick
ALL important. So, yes, choosing a cause to which you have a personal connection can make giving feel joyous.
TheMouseOfMadness
EFF is always a good choice if you at all value being able to use computers
AkujiMalice
Please not autism speaks. As an autistic person, I'm compelled to ask you not to support the "piece missing" hate group disguised as charity
Gibleteousjack
The Satanic Temple. They do the dark lords work.
Gibleteousjack
They're my charity of choice on Amazon Smile.
JensGespenst
Me... You can trust me, just give it to me and I'll Take Care of it.
IamNoOneToBeTrifledWith
My advice. And this is cold… but don’t donate to anything that big corporations ask you to donate to. Like Ronald McDonald house…
IamNoOneToBeTrifledWith
… They pay their workers Shit, and their CEO’s are billionaires. They can afford it themselves. But, Good on ya. I hope you find a good one.
GravyEducation
I don't know enough about Ronny McD but that type of charity is worth looking into. Temporary housing for families of sick kids. There's 1/
GravyEducation
One near the Mayo. I'll at least drop some change if I want to grab a soda and an unhealthy snack
Blurking
Think local. Somebody in your town needs help.
TinyBadger101
Planned Parenthood, pro publica, ACLU (not tax deductible) are all good
irvingb01
The ACLU is suffering from some serious internal ideological conflicts: https://www.nytimes.com/2021/06/06/us/aclu-free-speech.html
darkyamir
Usually local shelters are more than happy to get help (women, homeless, etc)
maximuminnovationstevejobs
GiveDirectly just directly transfers money to people in low income communities and does a bunch of studies on their impact

+1 for give directly

Search for local animal shelters. Atleast around here almost 100% goes straight to vet bills and supplies for surrogate homes.
tidepool
Yes yes yes! I help rescues save animals from kill shelters and it’s heartbreaking the lack of funds and needs for those. But donate direct
tidepool
and not through an org if you want to be sure. Many of your local shelters will be on FB and even have Amazon wish lists of supplies they’re
tidepool
in desperate need of. Rescues are also on FB so you can see if they’re doing good work before donating. They put so much into saving sick
tidepool
dogs (parvo, heartworms) and cats and barely get any of it back on adoption fees. It’s all donation funded usually.
Mobouncetotheoz
We have a rescue that does TnR so we reduce neighborhood stray cat populations, it makes a big difference
hexster
Save your 10% each paycheck for the year, and then reach out to your local schools and coordinate / purchase supplies for teachers.
gadaboutpoet
And/or pay off school lunch debt.
lucindamarie18
Save for a year and put it in a college, tech scholarship for low income student
lemonbasil
Not a great idea as there is no easy on ramp for this philanthropic path unless you have kids at the school, but it won't scale
trustworthyfart
I don’t think we are talking to a newly made millionaire. They are looking for a tithe not to start a foundation.
LooseMooseNoose
While at the same time lobbying for public funds to do that perhaps?
MySpiritAnimalIsTheUnpopularOpinionPuffin
You use "lobbying" but should be using "begging". Lobbying implies giving something in return. Teacher have to beg to get their needs met.
penzick
That shouldn't need to exist but it does. Here's a website that does exactly that: https://www.donorschoose.org/
JohatoAgoto
I think this would be a wonderful idea. Teachers use there own pay to supplies there class rooms . This would help so many.
WrathOfJigglypuff
... and vote to get rid of the assholes who insist that teachers buy their own supplies. That's nuts.
zechs3
My kid's school raises tons of money to pay for teaching assistants for Kindergarten classes. Makes a huge difference at that age.
NotSteveWozniak
oldpastywhiteguy
Talk to the teachers not the administrators
svent
This seems to be continuing down the path of making schools rely on tips. Also, fostering inequality even more (rich neighbourhoods etc.)
trustworthyfart
So give it to a school in a poor one.
trustworthyfart
Schools don’t have a choice in how much money they get. This would not foster anything but good will.
ALifeOfGlass
This is an EXCELLENT idea!
Hefelump
This. Absolutely this. It will make a huge difference in the US
GloveFullaVaseline
Yes.
M4GNETR0N
Great idea
Baltzdelirium
You could hook me up with a job. :D
thatguy1337
GiveWell. It’s a charity that was literally made with your same sentiment in mind. Focuses on making every cent go the farthest.

How is this not further up?!
dudeinsha
Wikimedia Foundation?
IAmZephyre
Planned Parenthood
penzick
Yes. Along with the ACLU [to me] they're two of the best uses of my money. And both have 90+ ratings on https://www.charitynavigator.org/

I thought the CEO of planned Parenthood was racist? Did I hear wrong?

Planned Parenthood also has a PDF response, if you Google planned Parenthood racist

St Jude. They do a lot for kids
drowninginthesouth
They helped my grandmother. She was born with a cleft palette and they fixed it for her when she was a child.
ithinkchaos
I came to say this. Their mission is that no family who has a kid with cancer will ever have to worry about bills.
colopctech
imgur has a charity to feed its members. Pizza dude or something
ImurevJourhein
Oh, good one. Maybe next payday.

Pizza angels - They do good work.
1LostPuppy
This comment, pizza dude, pizza angle. Most commercial charities exist to fund self. Avg 80%of donations goes to fund the charity, not help.
ThongsAreFootwear
Also @TheFreeMeaLLady provides free meals to LOTS of village kids in The Philippines. Direct assistance to locals from locals ??
FirstClassTicketToHell
Yes, @TheFreePizzaDude! The pizza angels are amazing. And they also do grocery orders too!
EdoubleLIOdoubleT
This comment right here... you could do it blindly or actively participate... either way , you know where it's going
Fizzisist
Pizza angels helped me once and I hope to help someone in the future, when I can afford it
EdoubleLIOdoubleT
Same here, my angel went above and beyond, bought my pets treats.. not cheap ones either. I hope she's OK, she was so nice and beautiful too

Iinajoki360
Oh god, I read about the women's shelters. Very bad
cosonfused
have you read about how they plundered the donated gifts for families in need? Can't find the thread anymore, but it was bad.
Iinajoki360
No. Maybe next year
ElbowDeepInSaintCelestine
Cross off Locks of Love too
CognatusGens
theOneHammer
also cross off the susan g komen foundation, 90% of their funds go to advertising
Yummybubblez
I think awesome games done quick is still going on twitch. Cancer research charity event
Bulmero8
Or breast cancer awareness
AmanRyno4672
Avoid Autism speaks. I can speak for myself Goddammit.
TheOneAndOnlyButtStabber
Or the pink cancer ribbon, as a cancer patient fuxk them.
theshinobi23
I thought the pink ribbon was for breast cancer awareness/fundraising for research through Susan G Komen. What did/didn't they do?
Badprenup
Most Komen money goes towards advertising and https://www.huffpost.com/entry/komen-foundation-charities-cure_n_793176
theshinobi23
Well, shit. TIL I guess.
TheOneAndOnlyButtStabber
Yeah.. is anything not fucking bullshit?
TsubakiTragic
cross off any religious organisation. I'd suggest local women's refuge or animal refuge. You also might try Kiva.
Wyldkat80
I donated a truckload of stuff after my yard sale, to our local womans shelter. They called the women out to directly take what they needed!
rbudrick
Some are secretly religious too, like Cars for Kids
avidatheist
Small local churchs are often really good charities
GooseWhoGames
Not when you can find much better local charities that aren’t religiously associated.
cigarsandmonster
Basically anything that has to do with the US government or is funded by the government in anyway is a no go.
Sweetamber92
G-grandad died in German bombing salvation army where supposed to take his last wage to my g-gradmum. They stole it.
theshinobi23
Go ahead and cross off PETA and American Red Cross, too.
Dunothar
Peta is a no-brainer. Surprized they are allowed to put their fucking ads on tv.
ADKCourage
And no Goodwill, for the love of Pete. They are not a charity! They are a for-profit organization!

Heisanevilgenius
And American Way
L0stellaVortimer
That's immediately not a name I trust, and I've never even heard of them!
theshinobi23
Never heard of that one. Do you mean United Way? Because they're also shitty af.
Heisanevilgenius
...yes. My memory is bad, haha

Fair enough. My mom worked for a church-based charity for a bit, and said United Way sucks. Their model is to gather donations for multiple

Is the Sally Army problem worldwide, or just US? I've never heard of issues in the UK.
SuperFatGirl
Are the people in white suits legit sally army? Outside grocery stores, street corners, etc?
Peachcappuccino
It's in Australia. My sister used to work for them.
AnonKneeMoose
Worldwide. It’s not spoken about as it’s entwined with many Catholic institutions but a large % goes straight to evangelism.
theworldcouldbeflat
Catholics help the poor through "st vincent de paul" or "Inn of the good Shepherd"
reichstein
GASP! That's shocking!
aThingWithTheStufAndTheJunk
Salvation Army isn't Catholic. They're a Methodist offshoot.
datester35
It looks like 83% of money donated is used correctly?
ycelpt
Worldwide. Wouldn't accept a donation from a friend because he was wearing a pride pin while donating. They said his stuff was too dirty.

Donate to the shriners hospitals for children. I am a shriner and we are very careful how it is spent, or donate to st. Jude's for kids.
NVGoddesscottage
Do Shriners still steal disabled kids from their families at 3 and convince them for 3 years their goal in life is cure? And rape a few?
Whatswrongwiththispicture
Both excellent charities who actually put their donations to good use efficiently and effectively
coothlesscthulhu
Here here! Similarly, Scottish Rite Hospital kept me alive and out of a wheelchair as a kid at no cost. They are my go to for donations.
needacheez
When I had almost no money I sent St Jude’s $10, and then they sent me $30 worth of crap trying to get more money from me. Made me mad.
Dragonfury5
They get all that stuff in bulk, and maybe free? I imagine the businesses that make it can write it off on taxes as charity
FierceAndAdorable
I got a call from the professional Fundraisers the Shriners here to get people to buy tickets to donate so kids can go to the circus. >>

Did he have to live there? And why support if he’s cured. Scam factory
