Yummy-Yucky-Yummy Technique
Poor Kyra went to the vet today for an upset stomach. She’s on Metronidazole which is disgusting. It’s grainy and makes them foam at the mouth. I give her liquid treat, then the medicine, then the treat again.
Waiting on the vet. She was a brave girl.
This is why I took her to the vet. Diarrhea, vomiting, and she clearly doesn’t feel well. She was the only survivor of her litter, so I’ve been watching her extra close.
She ate dinner!

I know, it’s my least favorite medicine to give them but it does it’s job. It doesn’t have a smell at all which makes me think bitter. It’s really grainy.

Poor Kyra, if it's anything like the hooman tablets of metro, I agree they are gross! I wish I looked as cute as her though when having my "why, god, why!" moment when I have to take it.

I had a cat who had bad allergies. Would develop sores on her back. They tried a steroid shot (and rudely didn't inform me it could cause insane weight gain. 3 pounds in a month I think it was? It was too fast. And my grandma REFUSED to let me reduce her food intake after. Poor fatty) and it didn't work so they put her on this med. Stupid expensive, and only liquid form for cats. She learned to go hide from me on the days she was supposed to take it. She'd drool and foam and hated it.

If you can ever find Gerber lamb baby food [I don't know if another brand would work] - it's a gift from the gods. EVERY SINGLE cat I ever owned, plus my friends' cats when they were sick, would eat it regardless of what their issue was - no exceptions. My boss's cat had not eaten for days and the vets couldn't find out why. He mentioned it to me and I shared one of my last remaining jars with him - he came in the next day with tears in his eyes and thanked and hugged me for "the miracle food".

Metronidazole is a people medicine, too. The liquid formulation is used to treat ulcers and mouth infections, and it tastes FOUL.

2 years ago when I was giving my stubborn elderly cat her chemo meds the same thing would happen, she'd foam at the mouth to get out, wouldn't eat anything it was mixed in, etc. I ended up doing a lot like you, but I'd mix the meds and the treat in the same oral syringe, 2x treat/meds. She didn't *like* it, but there was no foaming and only one syringe to deal with. She still bolts if she sees a syringe.

The foaming happens when they find something exceedingly bitter, it's how their body washes out the taste. Found that out when my old boy licked a green tree frog and then immediately looked like an overflowing bubblebath.

I read recently that a lot of medications taste bad because they're bitter-shaped. As in, the molecules themselves are shapes that our tongues interpret as 'bitter', and changing the shapes of the molecules would turn them into entirely different things.

You gotta get it further in the back of the mouth to avoid foaming. We had to give our cat meds when he first came home from the vet and it worked well.

She doesn’t always eat the treat by itself even. It’s really just to coat her mouth and then help her swallow. If I put it in a treat, there’s no way she’s eat it.

A fair point. But my first cat needed ear drops for a while & it was a 50/50 chance she would run when she saw the bottle or just happily purr while getting drops. My current cat needed vitamins at one point & either reluctantly ate the food with the vitamin paste or would try eating the tube as soon as she saw it l. And really by fickle I mean you're never 100% sure how a cat will respond to things.

My personal cat’s favorite thing to do is LOVE a sample of a treat I give her so I buy a lot of them and then suddenly she doesn’t like it anymore.

I mean, I assume you've reacted differently to the same thing at different times, and also possess preferences that are different than other people. That's not a cat thing or a fickle thing, that's just a living creature thing.
