Blastoff Comics
Probably the best Comic source you didn't know existed. Back in 2012, I got to help a very close friend gain a 100p achievement and open his own comic book store. But this wouldn't just be some run-of-the-mill shoppe. This was an art gallery.
Meet Blasty
Blasty is the mascot of the store, and the brain child of the insanely talented Sally Colby. Check her out at www.nutzenboltsworks.com.
Meet Scott and Jud
Scott and Jud are both veterans of the Comic Book industry. Scott is a New York Times bestselling author for his insanely good mashup, Star Trek TNG meets Doctor Who! http://tardis.wikia.com/wiki/Assimilation²_(comic_story)
The Comics
Scott and Jud didn't just want to make a regular comic book store. They wanted to highlight the gold and silver ages of comics. They wanted to make people understand that comics were art as well as entertainment. And they have access to some pretty amazing collections.
Big Dollars
Some of these comics are worth hundreds of thousands of dollars. They are sold on consignment, meaning the original owner gets a big cut when the product finally ends up at the register.
A Love of the Art
Scott and Jud don't just sell comics; They love them. Scott and Jud can talk about every single issue they sell because they've read them twice. I tried to stump Jud by picking some random story off the shelf. He could quote chapter and verse how the issue ran, where the artwork fell flat, and what I should buy instead given my personal likes.
Celebrities
Given the amazing rush of celebrities to the comic book medium, Scott and Jud have some very notable figures working their way through the store. Any time a new franchise starts, actors arrive to research their rolls. It means big business for them, but also a more accurate depiction of the characters for us.
I Love Spider-Man
Seriously, Scott and Jud have already taken all my paychecks back in the form of every Spider-Man comic.
Easy Being Green, It is Not.
This is easily my favorite painting in the store, and it was a purchase at Comicon. I wish I knew the artist, or I would give them all my money.
The Store
After a few years, the store has cemented itself as a NoHo staple. Come one down and check it out, if you live in the LA area. I guarantee you will have an amazing time.
Blast and Widget
My only real mark on the store was insisting that these two robots sit next to the register. Blasty and Widget.
Dog Tax
This is Teddy. He is a valiant steed.
