informative

As a Virginian, this is a problem here

It's honestly infuriating how many people I (barely) see driving in the rain without lights. This is some basic shit, people.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

They are for me, so's I don't get hit!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

that's the law! in U.K u have to have them ON ! i can't believe that they drive without them on

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 3

I usually turn them on if I'm not too drunk

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

I learned to drive in a state requiring lights during rain. It even irks me when cars in video games don't use their lights.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

That would be a fun game clue. Have the PC drive around and the bad guy is the only one with lights off

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Also do this in bright sun, if you're going in and out of shaded areas it can be disorientating to see a car you didn't notice

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

There's a reason why in Finland you have to have your headlights on at all times.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

This. So much this. Also turning on your headlights turns on your tail lights. All around great idea

9 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 1

Except that during the day it's much harder to distinguish running lights from brake lights. The more binary they are the better.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

AND IN OTHER SHOCKING NEWS, WATER IS WET.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Remember when your dash wouldn't light up if your lights were off, so in darker circumstances you had a heads up? Pepperidge Farm remembers.

The traffic DJs tell everyone this every five minutes when it rains, yet half the assholes on the road ignore it.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

But not your fog lights please

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 2

I once drove through a good chunk of New York state navigating only by the headlines in front of me. It was fucking terrifying.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Are daytime running lights not a thing on all cars?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

To be fair, automatic headlights don't often come on in those conditions, and many drivers with them don't think about it anymore

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

I have auto lights, and absolutely no indication of whether they are on or not. Drives me bonkers.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Mine has a couple small green lights for on, right where the highbeam indicator is (which is blue and a different shape)

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I wish I could upvote this more than once.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yes! Amen sista!

9 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 2

Did you just assume gender?!

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

Don't be silly my brutha

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Hahaha well played

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

My VW Golf always has lights on....it's impossible to turn them off.

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Mine only turn off when I pull my e-brake/parking brake.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Sounds like a fault and lots of flat batteries.. Mine go off when the ignitions off ;)

9 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Ahhh I forgot to specify. You got me.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Hey, it's the 'net. One of us is going to be overlay pedantic for laughs... :)

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

In Finland it's a law to have your lights always on a vehicle. Even on a brigth day.

9 years ago | Likes 44 Dislikes 1

Canada too. Reading these comments confused me since I've never even considered it would be a problem without lights on all the time.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Norway too! Why isn't this a law everywhere?

9 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 1

Sounds like a communist scheme to make you eventually use turn signals. Or seat belts.

9 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 1

lately cops have been super strict about both, and keeping a 2 car distance from the car in front.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Aaaand Denmark too.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I think that goes for all of scandinavia (And Canada apparently) probably because of early nights half the year and unpredictable weather.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You must be on the east coast, I was just venting about this on my commute today.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Changing lanes, almost hit a car without their lights on. Slowed down, got behind them and flashed my lights until they turned theirs on.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I hate when people turn on their hazards, & then it's difficult to tell they're breaking or not. If hazards are needed, get off the road!

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Hazards are essential on the interstate to warn approaching drivers who are going 70-80 mph+ that traffic ahead is slowing or stopped.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I think flashing hazards are easier to pick out in low-vis than solid brake lights. Typically I tap the brakes too when I see cars approach

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

granted I only use that when I'm in snow and super low (<50') vis so I'm crawling at <50% speed limit. If I stop, I'm more of an obstacle.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

In a wall of rain it's difficult to tell if it's brake or hazard lights unless you stare for a few seconds. Not the best thing to wait to

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Figure out whether you are going to brake or not. Can start to give a false sense of what's going on.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Hazards ARE easier to pick out than brake lights. HAZARDS ARE DESIGNED TO BE USED WHEN A CAR IS NOT MOVING AND IS A HAZARD TO MOVING CARS.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I just leave them on all the time. Light bulbs are cheap compared to crashes.

9 years ago | Likes 153 Dislikes 1

Me too. My first car had magic paint that blended into basically every road except maybe snow.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

In many EU countries that's the law.

9 years ago | Likes 37 Dislikes 1

Your 30% easier to see. Even on a sunny day. Should always have your lights, not daytime lights, your actual fucking lights on.

No reason not to use your real lights.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

For the past year, I've left my headlights on auto b/c turning them on dims the instrument panels & makes them hard to read in daylight. 1/2

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Also b/c I thought the daytime running lights were sufficient. It's my first car with them. 2/2

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

They last for at least a couple of years, too, even if always on. I have an EU model that has auto-on lights.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Unless you have to change them in a 2009 Chevy Malibu.... Seriously look it up

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

That's where you went wrong, you bought a chevy

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Not my choice. Wife had it when we got married. I'd like to trade it someday...

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Most newer cars keep the lights on by default.

9 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 2

Not often keep DRL's running, but now most are equipped with "halo" (I guess is the name) lights that run all times.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I've got a 2012 Ford Focus which has some fancy setup where the headlines turn on automatically when it gets dark enough.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Daytime running lights are different than regular lights. Even if the front is the same, you don't have taillights on.

9 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 2

I hadn't noticed the taillights didn't come on. That's silly.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

PEOPLE DON'T UNDERSTAND THIS. I flash people from behind because their lights aren't on! "BUT THEY ARE ON!"

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

My car keeps its regular lights on and switches them off when I turn off the engine. Volvo V50 from 2009

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I can do that with my Outback, but setting it that way disables the automatic high beams which is really annoying.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

In Florida it is law to have lights on in rain. I do it instinctually now any state I am in.

9 years ago | Likes 193 Dislikes 1

???? word.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My car does it automatically

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah, in PA, if your wipers are on your lights have to be on

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

in pennsylvania, if your windshield wipers are on, your headlights need to be on, even if it's light out. it's the law!

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Alabama, too. We're usually the last one to do anything.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Same in SC for any time your wipers are on (covers all precipitation types).

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

In Denmark your headlights always have to be on. That fucked with me when I visited England where that isn't the case. 1/2

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Almost got my dumb ass run over a few times cause I was so used to it. 2/2

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Same in va

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

In Finland your lights are on when you are driving. Period.

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Along with enforcement and fines commensurate with income or wealth?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Enforcement yes but it's not fined the same way as speeding is.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

At least there is enforcement. Although, I rarely saw police in Helsinki. Generally, Finns are more civilized, so it makes sense.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

A lot of people ignore this law though.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Law here in LA, yesterday during torrential downpour on 1 mile road, counted 6 cars without theirs on...

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Is law everywhere, people just don't always do it

This is illegal in some states. Be careful on this one. Best advice is to keep moving at a slower pace with your lights on, and DON'T STOP.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

In South Florida most road laws are not enforced unfortunately

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's law in Tennessee too

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

In Alabama also, should be everywhere. At least flip your yellows on

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Since when did they follow the law in Florida? Like that "No taking drugs and eating peoples faces law"

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That guy's tox screen came back negative.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Good point. Florida drivers are just grumpy retired folks going 65 in a 45 and it is terrifying.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

YOU FOOL! Do you know what you did by announcing youre from Florida... Now you're forced to fight with other Floridians. Get ready, im next.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Jokes on you. I moved recently.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

In Norway it's the law to have your lights on.

9 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

Same in Sweden, on all the time no matter the weather or time of day, but I guess good safety means less FREEDOM...

9 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

I guess freedom to save a few cents changing bulbs less often is valued over the general safety of others.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

There was a EU law saying it was okay to turn off the back light to save power and fuel... It was ridiculous and has been overturned again.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Wait, there are states where it isn't a law?

9 years ago | Likes 85 Dislikes 0

It's been a slow progression. Current rules by state: http://drivinglaws.aaa.com/tag/headlight-use/

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

lol Puerto Rico you crazy

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It's not a law here in Hawaii. My husband is from South Carolina so I was surprised when I saw a sign that said it's a law.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Not a law in Michigan. Wasn't in New York, as I recall, but it is on military bases

9 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 0

I think the law in NY is if you use wipers then you also need to have headlights on, but I could be wrong

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I live in N.Y.C. you are correct I believe. Also for any rain you must have them on

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

is it even enforced?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yes. It was getting so bad. They now have it on electric boards on the highway.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

No, the lights have been broken on my car for over a year so I'm hyper aware, tons of people drive here without lights in the rain.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm from Florida and didn't know that. Luckily I think I always did it out of common sense anyway. I have daytime running lights now anyway.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Now I'm in CA where no one thinks to turn them on, since it rains so rarely.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

True that. FL has electronic signs on the highway that tell you to turn them on because it is the law.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

DRLs don't turn your tail lights on, though...so you can still get rear ended by someone who can't see you. Hence, lights on.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yep...in some counties (e.g. Polk) you may even get ticketed for it.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Pretty sure that word should be 'instinctively'.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Either or
