What it's like now: 16 years sober today and my kid is just amazing. Life isn't always easy or fun but at least I don't have to drink today.

Edit: Wow!! Thank you for all of your encouragement and camaraderie! My sobriety is Pi Day. Send your favorite pie recipes? Have an amazing day, Imgur!!

I don’t know you but I’m sure as hell proud of you

You'll be okay. Find people who have what you want. Then do what they did.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You don't have to become a parent. Just saying. No obligation.

I was on heroin when I found out I was going to be a dad. Quit cold turkey. Seriously craved it for almost 4 years. Like a daily longing 1/2

8 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 2

2/2 for it. But never would have cracked. Also i joined military which probably helped keep me clean. But I thank my son for saving my life.

8 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 1

I know what you mean. I thank him for my life all the time.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

They make everything worth it

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Your son might have been the motivating factor, but YOU are the reason for saving your life.

Can we get a detailed story? I'm always skeptical when people say they got their shit together and their kid turned out a Amazing.

8 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 3

How detailed? That could go on awhile! I married his dad since we'd been dating awhile. That was a disaster. Battered women's shelter.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Homeless shelter. New job. New job. Try a career. Get a certification. College. All the while trying to model kindness and teach

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Responsibility. AA helped me stop drinking. AA helps me stay stopped. It's just what works for me. Does that help?

I was 19. It was difficult, we had to get it together quickly, but I'm grateful for the life we've built. He's seven now, beautiful boy.

8 years ago | Likes 228 Dislikes 6

My gf was 19 when we got pregnant. We were homeless addicts in vancouver. Moved 1200 km away. Now we've both been over a year happily sober.

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Look, ik judging is somewhat bad but holy fuck yo. Addicts and getting pregnant at 19...

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You think they haven't had that thought? We're our own harshest critics. If you must judge, I suggest to not direct it towards the subject.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

1) I was 22, my girlfriend was 19. We got our life together as quickly as we could (not overly fast, I'll tell you.) Four sons and several

8 years ago | Likes 51 Dislikes 1

several what? Go on, this sounds interesting/inspiring.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

2) disgruntled penguins riding velociraptors and carrying automatic wiffle ball bats pelted us with butterscotch snow cones while we dashed

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

3) from tractor to tractor with our gift-wrapped selection of Time-Life books. It was probably the happiest Juvembruary 7th we've ever had.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

4) (Since the accident.)

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Oh my god, that sounds just like my current boyfriend and I. I’m hoping for the negative test but I don’t know what’s coming...

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I hoped for negative too. Things have a way of working out the way they're supposed to. You'll be ok. Msg me if you want to talk. Good luck.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Thank you (:

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

We were both hoping for a negative test. That wasn't how I would've chosen to start our life together. So glad now that it wasn't up to me!

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Agreed!

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

2) grandkids later, we'll be celebrating our 25th anniversary this year. It certainly doesn't work this way for everyone, but parenthood

8 years ago | Likes 46 Dislikes 0

3) gave us a reason to grow into better people.

8 years ago | Likes 39 Dislikes 0

...

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

wow that's so inspiring, you guys should be proud of meeting the challenge & achieving something good out of it.

8 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 0

Parenthood sounds hard, more so if our own parents struggled with parenting us. Kudos to you guys for doing the hard work & succeeding.

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

That's what happened with us. We had to stop being reckless and very egocentric. It made me really more kind and patient.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Yes! Amazing! Thank you for sharing this!!

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Im 22 n i couldn't take care of a kid. Like at all. That would ruin my life n everybody's life.

8 years ago | Likes 73 Dislikes 10

Please don't have kids then I don't want you ruining my life

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

No worries buddy. I won't have any. Im happy having a lovely pet.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I have an irrational hatred for anyone that downvoted you for being smart and knowing yourself

8 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 2

Because they think that the birth of a child is a miracle or something n shouldn't be rejected.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I still don’t get it. They weren’t saying they love abortion, just that they didn’t want kids yet. Oh well. People are dumb.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Agreed, fuck that, got my own shit to do lol

8 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 4

I'm 32 and couldn't take care of a kid

8 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 1

34 and same

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Same. I'm the only child I need to take care of.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I’m 26 and couldn’t take care of a kid. How to adult??

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

I wanted to be done having kids by 30. Didn't start til 32. I know I wouldn't have been ready any earlier.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Yeah man, I refuse to have kids until I'm in my thirties and stable.

8 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

that day just never seems to come...

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

And that's fine.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm 32 and can barely take care of myself.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm in my 30s, still not stable. I'm okay financially, but I fed myself a slim Jim for breakfast today so.. no kids for me

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I'm 30, had dry cheerios and thin mint cookies for dinner..also no kids lol

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Guessing you’re both woman... single guys in their 30s can cook.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

I thought the same thing... I was 17. My son is 27 now with a bachelor's degree and son of his own. I wasn't ready to be a dad, but love

8 years ago | Likes 44 Dislikes 5

I was 18, almost 19. He’s 5 now and I sometimes wonder how that could negatively affect his life. This comment made me feel a little better.

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 2

Each day, just do your best. Sometimes your best won't be good enough, and that's okay. Don't let feeling inadequate stop you.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

will get you through it. When I thought my life was over, it was just beginning. I wouldn't change a thing.

8 years ago | Likes 35 Dislikes 4

Mate I can barely manage myself

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Breakdowns can result in the most glorious of breakthroughs.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

The economy was a lot better back in the 90's. Try doing it now, cost of a kid, rent and lack of jobs is ridiculous.

8 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 6

Not everyone gets to be lucky.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yea tbh I used to judge some ppl having kids because I rlly didn't think they'd be fit parents but it turned out having kids was the best(1)

8 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

Thing for them and they rlly got their act together because of it. Made me admire them. Moral of the story: ppl can change (2)

8 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0
