Chemo, or too busy for haircuts? (I have heard this reason before)

Chemo, but she's switched to a less aggressive form so her hair is starting to fuzz back in.

my mom went through chemo & then a less aggressive treatment as well; her hair is back but it's different - less curly than before

Odd, my mum's grew back more curly to begin with, before going back to being straight

Yeah- hers is still very short, so not sure about texture, but what she's got so far is much lighter than it was.

cancer changed my moms priorities a bit, she used to dye her hair, now she just lets it be; shes happy she has hair at all, even if its gray
