That red set off fireworks in my brain.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Nope! Screw this. Either it's sushi or it isn't. If we're cooking it, then bleeping cook it. This whole sear it but keep it raw is crap.

I have so many questions. Where did this gif come from? Why does that guy look like Andy Samberg with a fake nose? And why the fake hand?

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I thought he looked like Bob Ross!

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Why are we not talking about the jalapeno lime pilsner in the background... wtf is that? Lol

Stop, I'm gonna mess my pants

TUNASTEAK

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You can tune a guitar, but you can't tune a fish.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

At first I was like aww yeah then I was like aww no.

4 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 13

I'd do this all the time when I was living in Japan.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Sexy. Now I'm hungry but all I have is tuna in a can

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I don't like watermelon

4 years ago | Likes 661 Dislikes 12

Funny you say that, last week I had watermelon that was compressed and fermented just right to taste like raw tuna. Incredible!

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Those are obviously strawberries

4 years ago | Likes 32 Dislikes 0

Just put salt on your watermelon.

4 years ago | Likes 37 Dislikes 1

Drizzle it in mustard. Fuck I still can't believe that tasted so good what is wrong with me.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Watermelon really does have weird flavor combination possibilities

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Why does it taste so much better like that?

4 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Sweet and salty is a great combo.

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

salt makes everything taste more.

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Yup. Drinking a meh red? Try a tiny pinch of salt. .

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

That is my favorite thing to cook. Love ahi.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I love spiceology. A friend works there and gave me a huge box of spices.

The amount of comments saying it’s undercooked or unsafe to eat… holy fucking shit have you ppl never heard of sushi or sushi-grade fish?

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Torching sushi is a game-changer, no question.

7 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Costco sells good tuna. we do variations of this, usually sushi, and we usually use a torch. good stuff.

4 years ago | Likes 40 Dislikes 1

Ive been buying some from our local grocer fairly recently. It’s easy to cook and a nice change of pace from what I usually make

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Serious question: isn’t sushi raw and isn’t raw food typically unhealthy?

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 3

Is raw food unhealthy?

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Depends what it is.

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

right, which is why it was a weird question.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Not all sushi is served raw, like some fish literally can't be. It's very high quality fish that is served raw

4 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

Eh? I’m not an expert but the main point of cooking it typically to kill bacteria on things like chicken, but parasites on things like red

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Meat and fish. Idk the full story on it all but fish is typically ok if it’s fresh. I could also be very wrong in my explanation.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Sushi means "vinegar rice". Clyou add whatever you want to it to be "sushi". Many raw foods are okay to eat, carrots, apples, salads, etc 1/

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Regarding fish, it's generally okay to eat raw if it's fresh or frozen properly to kill parasites. In general bacteria that grow in fish 2/

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Cannot usually survive us because we're in general 15-20 degrees hotter than fish so we "cook" it from our own internal heat

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

there is a lot to unpack here, but generally cooked food is easier for the body to turn into energy, se we get more out of it.1/?

4 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

pre refrigeration, cooking was also a good way to "sanitise" food, especially meat where harmful bacteria will grow. 2/?

4 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

most fish in sushi will be salt cured or put through its own treatment (depends on the fish) that makes it perfectly fine to eat. 3/4

4 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

also fun fact, the term sushi actually refers to a specific way of preparing rice rather then to the eating of raw fish.

4 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

What's the point of cooking the outside 1/4" and leaving the rest uncooked? Does it change the flavor of the rest of it?

4 years ago | Likes 277 Dislikes 36

Ya'll americans really eat all this shit raw then just stop pretending and skip frying alltogether smdfh

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

You essentially get the best of both worlds, you get the delicious flavor of the tuna itself with addition of the smokiness of searing it

4 years ago | Likes 62 Dislikes 0

I agree completely

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Dude, it is disgusting!

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 8

It is the same as eating a steak rare

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 4

I really, really don't.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Also, like steak, once cut, bacteria only really lives on the surface, so searing also ensures its safety to eat as well as flavour benefits

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

I think it's ahi tuna in which case cooking it through destroys the cut. You just wanna sear it.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's called tataki. It's a style of searing lightly for flavour.

4 years ago | Likes 83 Dislikes 1

Correct!!

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

So.. lightly fried fish fillets?

4 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 0

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

tataki from my favorite sushi place:

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Warms it up to serving temperature so you aren't just eating a slab of cold fish. Although it doesn't "cook" it, the warmth does change (1)

4 years ago | Likes 34 Dislikes 2

(2) The texture and make the fat start to render just slightly, making it flakier.

4 years ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 0

Haha this comment has had so many replies. People absolutely HONKING for seared tuna

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I know raw salmon on sushi has this very fresh and light flavor and cooked has a slight fishy taste and something awesome I cant place.

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Maillar reaction

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Technique is called tataki!

4 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

Sure does! :D I would slice them thinner, myself. So delicious. If you stick the fish in the freezer for a week it kills off the parasites.

4 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 2

Only if your freezer gets to -4F, and I think there are a few that can survive that still.

4 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

From what I read, it's fine if you freeze it for a week. Much faster for industrial freezers that can get colder.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Have you ever eaten food before?

4 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 7

Yes, cooked meat, not raw.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Do you see how much tuna is left raw?

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

The only thing better than raw tuna is seared raw tuna

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

It changes the flavor when you eat the piece, yes. Sashimi tuna and salmon are often seared. Makes them more delicious, at least for me.

4 years ago | Likes 359 Dislikes 6

Tuna is wonderful like this.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Breaks down some fat and makes it yummy and so soft.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

"Often" is saying a bit too much, but yes, sometimes they do blast sashimi - mostly just salmon - with a blowtorch.

4 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I had no idea! I’ve always assumed that they were completely raw. Do you know of any other meats that are seared for sushi?

4 years ago | Likes 43 Dislikes 2

In Japan, some places Javed seared sashimi chicken. It’s a specially raised chicken. I don’t know much more, just saw a small clip about it

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

No no they're raw when you get sushi, there is another way to serve them other than sashimi or Nigiri where they are quickly seared.

4 years ago | Likes 44 Dislikes 2

Literally nothing nowhere saying stuff served on nigiri sushi has to be raw! I've had seared foie grass on it. Sushi only refers to the rice

4 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 2

I once had a tiny cheeseburger nigiri in japan… it tasted wrong

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah I guess I didn't word that right. I was speaking to what they had in mind.

4 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

You generally want to have a nice crust with as raw center as possible. With fish this can be actually undercooked while still safe.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It's tasty! Soon delicious. It's like searing a steak

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Its fantastic!

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It's absolutely delicious

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

It makes it unbelievably delicious. Some of tbe best dishes ive had were seared tuna. Pair it with a light wasabi cream sauce and... Heaven

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

You don't want to eat well done tuna. This is perfect.

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Between this and well done it is a whole universe to go, my friend.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Late 1980s. Chain restaurant. Tuna was becoming a thing. I'd never had it. Comes to me and it's all GRAY. Had about 3 bites & noped.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Gross.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You don’t have much of a culinary background, do ya?

4 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 37

Asking questions is how you learn. You either asked questions or made mistakes to be good at anything. A book only goes so far.

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

They were just asking a question. Maybe try and respect people who are trying to learn something?

4 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 1

Didn’t mean it as disrespect, a mild ribbing at most

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 7

Hey, they were just asking a question too /s

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Would rather use it for sushi then cook it

4 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 53

Someone has never had the succulent seared tuna in their mouth! Yes it changes it. And I love tuna as sashimi too. Just different

4 years ago | Likes 29 Dislikes 2

Who says you can't use cooked fish in sushi? Sushi is the rice. I made 18 hour cold smoked salmon sushi.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

This isn't really cooked though,

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

It's almost like it was seared with purpose which also exists in sushi.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Also. Cold smoked salmon for 18 hours isn't really cooked.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

You can just as easily fry salmon skins and use that for sushi

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Than*

4 years ago | Likes 30 Dislikes 1

I've given up fitting with my autocorrupt

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Maybe they are onto something. Eat sashimi, regurgitate, sear and enjoy again!!!

4 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Idk why people are downvoting this, it's a legit opinion. I happen to like both but whatever

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 16

It really isn't. Sushi is the rice, not raw fish. There are multiple forms of sushi that uses cooked protein.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

So this opinion that sushi needs to be raw fish has no factual basis in the concept of what makes sushi be sushi.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's not a legit opinion if you have never tried 1 of the 2 things you're trying to compare.

4 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 3

How do you know they haven't?

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 13

Read their first comment.

4 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 3

Why would you put jam on top of your toast, does it change the flavor of the the rest of it?

4 years ago | Likes 148 Dislikes 48

This isn't the same thing at all.

4 years ago | Likes 32 Dislikes 50

Wouldn't do much good to draw a comparison using the same subjects

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 4

This is the proverbial apples and oranges, though.

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 6

Whatcha got that's better?

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

A better one would be why toast your bread does it change the flavor?

4 years ago | Likes 37 Dislikes 1

Toasting the bread goes all the way through though

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 3

Not if you cook it medium-rare

4 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Toast is not raw, though.

4 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 4

Toast is also not raw dough.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

;-)

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

No, but one could consider a slice of bread to be "Raw Toast"

4 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1
