The incident you're talking about was known to the public when it happened, it just wasn't until like 20-something years later that it came out how close to Japan it had actually happened. The DoD said it occured hundreds of miles away at first, which later revealed it was only a few dozen miles away from Japanese territory.

It's actually proven they have something better than nukes: they can prevent traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, which after this nonsense is done with will act as a better deterrent than nuclear weapons could. The US will likely invade, yes, but it's going to leave the US so weak that it will likely no longer be a superpower.
