I am helping to feed about 6 families in Gaza right now. I send them money any chance I get. It's the least I can do. It's also emotionally exhausting and I'm not exactly rich. But I find ways to make it work. My biggest fear is finding out they have been hurt or worse. It keeps me awake at night. I really don't know how we will get them out but that's the goal. Get their children to safety.

Germany definitely supports Israel out of guilt over Holocaust, and a lot of people in the West also support Israel because they feel that Jews are owed that as compensation for the Holocaust. Additionally "Jerusalem is a Jewish city, Temple on the Mount is Solomon's Temple, Judea is Jewish homeland, it's the Promised Land from Exodus" are core christian beliefs too. There is strong religious foundation for this conflict and the West's involvement in it.

I've always believed that for religions to spread and the donations to keep rolling in... They need some kind of enemy to fight.. (devil) and the devil has to influence someone to give them an evil enemy to hate and fight.. (lgbtq+, other races, other religions). If there was no one to point at for their members to hate and feel superior too, religions would die out in 1 or 2 generations imo.

We have rational thinking, and that tells us that sometimes, there are things you just cannot do. So, while I do not suggest we "turn off" empathy, we sometimes have to sublimate the urge to do something about it.

I do think this is missing a step. We could make a change, do something to help. People do this. However, most of us decide not to do that, for a variety of reasons, maybe our responsibilities, certainly our fear, maybe any of a number of other reasons. I acknowledge that it happens, I deplore those responsible, including myself in some small way as a US citizen, I choose not to help this time, and I move on. Sometimes I do help. It's good to keep an internal record of these choices.

We cannot take care of others WITHOUT taking care of ourselves. It is hard to offer someone your hand in support, if your own footing is crumbling beneath you.
So: do what you can, when you can, but remember to take care of yourself, or there won't be a "you" to lend aid to others.

I find this comfort partially in the knowledge that my nation's decision to overextend its global influence to an unreasonable, unsustainable level were made when my grandparents were teenagers (and most of them not yet Americans).

You have to meet people where they are though and if voting is all they can do, it's enough. Laying expectation on people to do more is how you make it so they choose to do nothing or feel like anything they do isn't worth the effort anyway because you're telling them it isn't enough. Privilege masks your ability to truely know what someone else has capacity for, others are not you and so you can't expect them to be as capable as you either.
