Backstory:
Many of you may have seen the "Blacksmith 9/11" video on the front page, in fact, some 89k of you did. Almost 300 of you commented and I have been reading them all. So here's the deal. That's me in the video. My name is Trenton Tye and I'm a professional blacksmith. I've made the rounds and have been on Forged In Fire (S01EP02) and have hosted an entire series for Discovery (Master of Arms). For all that, I am still just a loser in the middle of nowhere that beats on metal. I have a cool perk though in that I get to see people's honest reactions to my work out on the internet. I'm not sure "perk" is the right word as I've heard other youtubers refer to reading the comments as "self cutting". This video was taken at the end of a work day. I had a fellow on Facebook post about the whole jet fuel thing and I sent him a very polite message indicating that steel fails before it melts and referred him to several industry resources on the matter. Well, he was a nutjob and the hate/ignorance filled response i got was.... less than palatable. As I read the response, I thought to myself, "I've got a Youtube channel and a smart mouth". The video you have seen was the result and was why I was so upset. The video went up and I went home and to bed. At 7:00 the next morning, my apprentice called me and asked if I had looked at the video. I rarely do. When I turned on my computer, my email inbox just started filling up with downloaded messages. When I finally got to the view count, it was well over a million hits. Over the next ten hours as my video made the rounds, I was on news sites around the world, even RT (Moscow) called to use my video. That's when the death threats started rolling in. Over the day, I received about 50 calls with mouth breathers of various sorts, all with a myriad story of how I was going to be killed by them. Some just screamed, some ranted, I think one dude was jerking it. It was bizarre. By the end of the day, I had over 500 email threats. This is not to even speak of the 6000 comments on the youtube video, most of them completely insane. I think by the time everything settled down, I had a file four inches thick at the local sheriffs office where i was turning in threats. Now the good news is, we are well armed down here and new folks are easy to spot and aside from one or two instances, nothing in person happened. I think I was doxxed a few hundred times but the idiots didnt realize the vast majority of my info is public already because I'm kinda nobody and I do business in the public sphere. It was a video that very much changed how I do my work on the road (I perform and demonstrated blacksmithing at large events) and how much I keep eyes out for the nutter in the crowd.
The Point:
I've read comments on me and my video for five years now. Early on, it was a flood of trolls and batshit crazy people that came up with wild ideas. One guy on YT video affirmed that I was a paid CIA Disinformation Agent and he had personally seen my badge in Texas. My favorite was when one guy claimed the shop was actually a green screen. At any rate, as the years have passed, I've seen more and more sensible folks making reasonable commentary. There are still screamers out there to be sure but for a long time I worried that the crazies were unbeatable and that common sense and decorum was just something to be relegated to a fond memory. Today, someone posted clips of my video (thank you, by the way) and I got to read comments from my fellow Imgurians. By in large, I saw people making reasonable arguments, show good judgment, and not being a giant collection of trolls. After years of expecting the worst, I got to see decent folks again in the comment section. I wanted to thank you folks for that. Imgur has been a welcome relief from the ins and outs of shop life during a pandemic. Thank you folks, your decency and sense are much appreciated. -Trent

Thanks to jasonPositivityPilot for the post.

Wait, so the "CIA Disinformation Agents" who spread false info (and really should be low-key, are given badges? CIA fucking it up again.

Saw you on forged and I've watched several of your YouTube vids to learn more about forging and knive making. Love your work!

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

As someone that investigates all of the conspiracy theories, I really appreciated your video giving a simple answer to the melting steel one

4 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Also, sorry you had to go through all that negativity for just providing your professional opinion.

4 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Its the price of putting yourself out there. You cant try to be an attention whore then complain (much) about the results /

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Hate mail is 20% of all mail I get but this, this was a bit much.

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I still use your video from time to time, to debunk idiots.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Gotta get those steel beams up to forge welding temperature.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Don't let the bastards get you down.

4 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

I may be late to comment, but I am willing to admit that I know jack-shit about metal and I whole heartedly agree with everything you said.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I have always thought the video was well done and it demonstrated perfectly why the conspiracy nuts are fucking idiots. Well done sir!

Thank you sir!

Got you back. Just saw for the first time can’t believe you caught all that shit . Good job..

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I remember thinking that this video was glorious when I saw it the first time. Ignore the pseudo science bs, point out the facts. Perfect.

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

You know the world is in a hell of a state when Imgur is a bastion of sane thinking and reasoned commentary.

Eeby Deeby. Feel better now? ;)

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Even if someone is correcting you or you correct them on here, it's pleasant exchange. There are some "gotcha!" jerks. Just hit mute on them

4 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

We are living in a time when sharing scientific fact is a possible risk. Thankfully, Imgur seems to be less toxic than other communities.

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Our insanity is of a kinder sort

TBH Lassannn is a entertaining love-hate relationship with the imgur community.

Clearly you are a street performer as well. Seen plenty of your posts, you out west?

4 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 0

Decent comments? You sure it was Imgur? Ha! Kidding. For the most part, we’re a supportive community and we LOVE art and the trades. Peace!

I like to think jerking off guy was just multitasking. Busy day, gotta get it in.

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

i remember seeing this years ago and passing it around to my friends like "see, this is how you talk to conspiracy theorists."

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Welp, time to knock this respectful discourse down a peg

I saw that episode of Forged in Fire. It’s cool to know you’re on Imgur!

4 years ago | Likes 159 Dislikes 1

There have been at least 2 imgurians on that show now.

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Appreciate you watching the show! I need to drop 50 lbs!

4 years ago | Likes 46 Dislikes 0

I don't understand why people who have never made a canister Damascus decide to do it for the first time on FIF if they don't need to.

Put down your tools

4 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

This is by far the worst part of seeing yourself on camera. Hearing your own voice through a mic is equally rough

4 years ago | Likes 25 Dislikes 0

I sang for about 4 years before hearing it played back. It's.....just an odd sensation until you get used to it.

4 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

Same. But it's also a blessing, because you can actually be a fan of yourself, since it sounds so different "on tape"

I'm not sure if it's a creator setting you can tweak or not, but the end title cards cover the good part when you actually bend it

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Thank you! Corrected!

Those are some badass gloves

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I saw this when you first put it up. I love how simple it is, informative but to the point. You did the world a service with this, thank you

4 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

Nice work! Just letting you know that on mobile the whole part where the glowing steel is in the anvil is hidden by your recommended vids

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I just watched your video. I like your style. https://i.imgur.com/DWvaN4x

Well, thank you! I've been told I'm an acquired taste.

Straight shooting, no bull, honest, and probably loyal as hell to those who earn it? You remind me of 2 ppl. Me and my hubby.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'd say we were separated at birth but that would be problematic!

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

My parents and I would have to have a little chat that's for sure! But I did always want a brother.

4 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Never seen it before, that's fantastic. Good idea to turn the comments ;-).

4 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

So, it was a matter of necessity. Thousands of comments would come in and I could'nt clear them fast enough. Think was /

4 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

12k "filtered" comments when I made the call to stop them.

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Amazing video. You can't reason or explain anything to those nut jobs...they just want to argue and regurgitate all the NPC voice lines.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Glad I have a job

4 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Then you are safe from my would be fury!

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The palpable disgust in your voice at the end is perfect +1
