What a way to meet the neighbors
So, I just moved into my house about two months ago. I've waved to the neighbors but never actually met them. I have seen their two dogs though, a large boxer and a small chihuahua (or something similar). Also in our neighborhood, there are these two black dogs (with collars) that roam the streets from time to time.
About 9 o'clock last night my wife and I hear the sounds of vicious violent dog-fighting. I go outside and see my neighbors house all dark, no cars in the driveway. Fighting continues so I run across the street and see my neighbors boxer tearing into a smaller black dog (boxer is about 80-90 lbs and black dog is about 40-50 lbs). I jump the fence and pull them apart. They both have collars so this helped. I get them separated and manage to get them both calmed down. They are both really sweet, very tame dogs. The boxer growled at me a little after he realized what was going on, but hey, I'm a stranger in his yard. After all was said and done I realized how stupid of me it was to jump into the middle of a dog fight, but I was luck and did not get bitten or hurt. I was mostly concerned about the dogs.
So, I put a leash on the black dog and took him over to my house. He was bloody and covered in dog slobber, but his wounds were superficial and he was not behaving like an injured animal. I gave him a bowl of water and some kibble. My wife asked our other neighbors if they recognized who the black dog belonged to because we both thought it was one of the two that roams the neighborhood and we thought it had somehow gotten into the neighbor's backyard. None of the neighbors knew the dog. Finally, I called animal control and explained the situation to them.
About an hour later the animal control truck pulled up. We loaded the dog into the back and were filling out paperwork when my neighbors pull up at their house. I yelled over to get their attention and then asked them about the dog in their yard. They freaked a little because he had been hurt but then told me they were dog-sitting for a friend and the two dogs had been fine together all day. Well, I was totally embarrassed for calling animal control on their dog, but the animal control guy was really cool. He got the neighbor's information and then returned the dog to him. The neighbors took the dog home and then the guy (I'm assuming they are married but don't know for sure) came over to thank me for saving the dog. I apologized for calling animal control and explained what I thought had happened. If I had known the dog was his I would have just left a note and taken him to our backyard, but I didn't know. He was really cool about it and told me he would have done the same. They seem like really nice, caring people, and yet one more reason I'm glad we bought the new house.
TL;DR: see the meme.

Don't feel bad, you did absolutely the right thing. You just tried to help the puppy. :)

That was a good story.

I'm impressed with the mature discussion of the misunderstanding. Happier ending than I expected.

Moral of the story: always bring the new house

Not sure if the blue was needed

Well, I felt awkward for having almost had their dog hauled off by animal control.
woolywoodstock
Well I for one have never seen an 80 pound boxer but it was a good story.
barbarianchick
They can, but are usually large (27") and sometimes a little bit chubby.

It's possible it's an American Bulldog. I just know it's a big fucking dog.

I read this whole thing thinking that their was an illegal dog fighting ring at the neighbours.. the ending disappointed me.

The sound of it from my den made me think the same thing. Whence my initial caution. Had it been, I would have gotten my blowtorch.

You should get a gun first if you don't wanna get shot to death by people that dog fight
HarryDresdenIsMySpiritAnimal
I did have a gun. I live in Alabama. I think they are required by law when you leave your house.
