I make viking clothes and all sorts of viking gear for my reenactment. This is a backpack frame that I made from green wood. It's based on the backpack frame that was found with Ötzi the iceman. He predates the Viking age by alot, but its the best option I have found for hiking.
Blacksmithing is fun! Have only made small easy things so far, but I look forward to learning more.
In the smithy at Birka.
I hand sewed a tent in linnen fabric a few years ago. It has door flaps in the ends, but in this photo they are rolled up on the outside.
I make viking shoes. These are based on a find from the Oseberg ship in Norway. All hand sewn. I have been hiking in these. They work better than you imagine, but they are very slippery when its raining or snowing.
Don't forget to change your socks once in a while when hiking. I have made the socks as well of course. They are made using a technique called needle binding (nålbindning) that was used during the Viking age.
And of course I hand sew all my garments as well.

Best wood for a frame of backpack is Willow or hazelnut, you can also find iron to forge in the bottom of bog Lakes
