A quick estimate of the number of elementary school students is 900,000 (AI estimate for what it is worth). That $700 million is about $778 of additional funding per child. To cover the education of a child for one year. Teacher salaries, school infrastructure, supplies, etc. A gross oversimplification to be sure but seems like such a small amount for education...

The only bloat ive ever seen is really with the Admin, and honestly its not fully their fault imo. Its the government grant system that they use. Admins only goal is to get as much money as possible for schools, gov wants students to hit preset metrics(attendance, test scores, etc) they list out in order to get said grants. So admin makes arbitrary systems designed to maximize the chance they can get them at the cost of educating students in ways that actually help them learn. Shits fucked, yo.

The Post is definitely coming at it from the wrong angle, but on average the US spends more $ per pupil than other countries with much worse results. But a lot of that budget goes to bloated administrative salaries and sports programs and not actual education. IDK why my high school needed six vice principals to act like security guards with degrees and not back up teachers.

Meh, some of them are. But that’s often due to bloated administrative staffing. Spend per pupil is pretty high in this country and there’s little correlation between that spend and results.

A word like 'bloated' is a philosophical judgement, an opinion. The only inherently bloated budgets are those of for profit industries that comp executive private jet travel. Unless the superintendent has a private jet the school pays for their budget isn't bloated. That being said it is very possible administrative staff salaries could indeed be bloated compared to teachers and other ops staff.

Eeeehhhhh... NYC spends more per student on public school than anywhere else in the US, on top of having more students than anywhere else in the US. It *is* an enormous budget, and it *is* concerning that the results aren’t better after spending all of that money. It’s not insane to think there could be bloat in there. What’s insane is cutting it without knowing what the bloat is, or how to actually get good results. Get the results first, optimize efficiency after.

Its certainly more pronounced at the college level, but a lot of public high schools spend full teachers salaries on coaches who only have to teach two gym classes or something, i remember having to fundraise for new band uniforms to replace the 10yo ones we had while the (losing) football program got a new stadium, i think they just fundraised for a better scoreboard than the school would buy em.
