#14 Does AZ even have monsoon season anymore @op? I visited my folks in Abq NM for the 4th (first summer visit in years). The Rio Grande was dry. DRY! Never in my 22 years living there have I ever seen it dry in Abq. And my folks said they haven’t really gotten a good rain in ages. The monsoons should be starting nowish. There aren’t the thunderstorms I remember from my childhood anymore either. Just wondering if it’s similar out there.

#12 Will never not astound me that the only difference between "terrorist" and "militant activist" is the opinion of the speaker on what they did.

#34 I went to a Catholic school. Even the bible I have since primary school says this. It was not that all was good, but all this anti-science, puritan stuff was mostly unheard before the rest of the world became infected by US WASP ideology via the interwebs. And now we all suffer.

The Ginkgo tree is a "living fossil". It is the last living species in the order Ginkgoales, which first appeared over 290 million years ago. Meanwhile, almost all of the plant species alive today originated during and after the Cretaceous Period, so around 140 million years ago. I only know this because of John Green. (A little suprising it wasn't Hank.)

Just a guess: folks are white-knighting Homer's "Odyssey" after only seeing Twitter discourse about the trailer for Nolan's adaptation.

2 weeks ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

Odysseus is not a hero. He is a trickster, more in common with Loki, Coyote, or other figures that use cunning, guile, deception, and outright lies to achieve their goals compared to force of arms, feats of strength, or honorable deeds. They are often self serving with any benefits for others being secondary effects of their actions. Makes for an entertaining protagonist, but conflicts with the typical definition of 'hero'.

2 weeks ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

So you're saying the guy who called himself "nobody" and blinded a cyclops was not an honorable man? Well I never!

2 weeks ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

I mean, he’s definitely a “hero”. He’s like one of western civilisation’s first two archetypal heroes. The word is based on him. The fact that he doesn’t match with 1940’s Superman isn’t his fault.

University of Austin - *NOT* U. Texas at Austin - is a conservative grift school. Conservatives think Crhistopher Nolan's Odyssey movie is

woke because it portrays figures of Greek myth as complicated and even non-white sometimes. They like their heroes stupid-simple. & White.

2 weeks ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 1

Example: Odysseus is famously, e.g., a draft dodger. He pretended to be insane when they came to make him honor his promise to help Agamemnon. They had to trick him into dropping the act.
