On July 9th, 1864, 1,294 US troops were lost in the Battle of Monocacy.
Their sacrifice gave a vital day for the Union Army’s reinforcements to reach Washington DC. Their sacrifice prevented the Confederate Flag from ever entering the Capitol Building.
156 years, 5 months, and 29 days later a new domestic enemy brought the flag to the Capitol Building.
