De Hefbrug. Rotterdam

De Hefbrug. Rotterdam, 1927. Designed by engineer Pieter Joosting. Built to carry trains across the Koningshaven.

Decommissioned in 1993 when a tunnel made it obsolete. Every other bridge on that line was demolished.

De Hefbrug remained. Preserved. Declared a national monument, standing exactly where it always stood.

Every evening around 22:00, 350 LED lights dim in sequence across its steel frame, simulating a train crossing the bridge one more time. Not because the trains are coming back. But because what passed through here mattered.

I once walked underneath it with someone. That time is now part of something that is gone. Just like the time of the trains.

The bridge remains. The lights still run.
