I was a Tank Commander

I recently did a post clearing up some questions people had about Tanks and Armored Warfare. A lot of people wanted to know about gunnery, so here we are.

First, a Lesson on Parallax

If you look at the M1-Series tank, you may notice something. The main gun (cannon) and the Gunner's Primary Sights (rectangular box just above the cannon in the picture) don't point in the same direction. This causes something called parallax, where what the eye sees and where the cannon is pointed don't add up.

To compensate for this, the tank uses an incredibly complex computer, and a little device called the MRS.

What is an MRS?

The Muzzle Reference Sensor is a small tube that is used to calibrate where the sights look compared to the cannon. As a tank crew, we can fight with our without our computers (think the movie Fury).

The MRS allows us to quickly calibrate against parallax, shoot straight, and destroy the enemy faster than they can find us.

Oh, and yes. That is a radioactive symbol you see there. It's literally the least dangerous thing about working in a tank.

Bore Evacuators

Watch the gif. Notice something? After the initial explosion (blast envelope), you can see a secondary puff of white gas. That is from the Bore Evacuator, the little hump in the middle of the cannon.

Bore Evacuators help prevent flareback, or gasses pumping back into the turret after a round is fired. It's not deadly, but it can be startling and sometimes dangerous.

Essentially, the initial explosion carries the majority of gas out of the cannon, but a little is trapped in the evacuator. Then, the vacuum effect of the blast pulls that gas out through the cannon. This in turn pulls any leftover debris from the cartridge out of the tube.

The Almighty SABOT

The APFSDS-T (Armor Piercing Fin-Stabilized Discarded Sabot-Tracer) is the all-purpose anti-tank round. It is often called the "Silver Bullet," because it will absolutely ruin the enemy's day.

What is a SABOT?

The "SABOT" refers to the petal around the actual projectile, which is a Depleted Uranium (DU) spike. The petals keep the round snug in the cannon so a proper ballistic solution can be made.

How does that work?

The petals fly off as soon as the round leaves the cannon, letting the lawn dart fly off in search of new friends. This guy flights VERY straight and level, and can hit targets well over 2 miles away.

What good is a lawn dart?

In a few words? Kinetic energy.

The SABOT travels at an insane speed (the newer darts break the sound barrier a few times over). That kind of impact tends to get physics all pissed off.

But is it effective against vehicles?

The kinetic energy generates so much heat, it melts the skin of the vehicle and uses that molten metal as shrapnel. A SABOT can kill just about any target.

Effective?

During the Thunder Run, when 1st Armor drove to Baghdad during Gulf War 2, Iraqi armor hid behind berms of sand. Iraq is very flat in large areas, and these berms stood out like sore thumbs. An enterprising tank commander did a "recon by fire," (shoot at something and see what happens), and a second later the turret of a hidden T-72 flew into the air.

The SABOT went through the sand berm, through the tank, blew up the ammo rack, and ripped the top off the enemy tank.

Feel the HEAT

High Explosive Anti-Tank rounds. These are the grandaddies of the ammunition ready rack. Simple (sort of), and made to work every time, these are no longer the primary armor defeating round. Instead, they are used on trucks, armored transports, buildings, and masses up groups of people.

How do they work?

Unlike the SABOT, these are explosive rounds. The "head" of the round is the pressure-sensitive warhead. When it comes in contact with its target, it activates a simple-but-effective method of destruction.

The power of Copper

A small copper plug is super heated on impact. Little known fact: melted copper can melt through a ton of things, and very quickly. The melted copper plug burns through armor, leaving a hole.

Then an explosion fills that hole.

And against a tank?

Yes, but only the older models. T-90's need a little more love than a HEAT can provide.

The Canister Round

The Canister, or CAN round, is a shotgun shell for tanks. It is used to disrupt enemy troop movement. At 300-500m, it is...very effective.

Zombies be gone

It can be used against soft-skinned vehicles, but mostly it is for use against troops on the ground. So zombies. This is how we defeat zombies.

More Questions?

Yes, there are more ammunition types that I am leaving off, mostly because I don't know if they are unclassified yet and I'm not taking that risk.

If you do have more questions, ask me anything.

"Disrupt enemy troop movement" - that's one way to put it...

My grunts know the silver bullet as something else entirely different. And man do they fear it heh.

my dad was a 19k for 20 years. i knew all this stuff already :P no but seriously thanks for posting. armor is awesome.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Fun fact. T80s were more vulnerable to ammo cook off (and losing their turret) then 72s because the ammo storage was above the tracks.

That is fun. +1

Well, shit. I was all set to go pick a fight with the US Army. I GUESS I'll find some other way to spend my Sunday afternoon.

Neat.

Did the math with average weights and velocities and the round hits with 5705 kJ of force or 5705000 Newton meters.

Wooooo! Science!

I was a tanker at Lewis for four years. Great post!

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

i’m asking for friend , how should he protect his tanks from these explosive’s. thanks DT

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

not 'zombies,' people who get complete fucked to shreds just when they thought their day couldnt get any worse

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Do modern tanks use or have an equivalent to HE, and/or HESH rounds?

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yes. OpSec though.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Well that makes sense, thanks for the answer.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

TIL recon by fire ..heh

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It's the best.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

But does it blend?

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Depleted Uranium! Don't breath that.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Question: What's your favourite non-American tank?

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Merkava Mark IV and the Leo 2.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Also, flying SABOT petals can also ruin your day

10 years ago | Likes 66 Dislikes 0

Very true.

10 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 0

Explain? Also work stories?

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Flying metal debris will hurt. Also just being close to an MBT firing can be very deadly.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The metal bits that fly off the "main shot" are un-cuddly.

10 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

I'm assuming that's you with the cigar?

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yes indeed.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You look like you love it when a plan comes together.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Nice, did you guys really name your tank pew pew?

you look like a PAARNG tanker i knew. got to fill in as a loader on a couple of their company's tanks a few times. (was a 13F) super badass.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Clever. Command shot down 'anal probe' when we suggested it. Stuck with 'adrenaline rush'

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The "silver bullet" I know is something TOTALLY different... Ask any dehydrated/overheated marine.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Ask a Marine tanker if he's ever kept a few extra "silver bullets" in the cooler during gunnery.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

"It is often called the "Silver Bullet," because it will absolutely ruin the enemy's day." that and because it's literally silver lolol

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I had no idea they still use HEAT rounds, didont the explosive armor blocks kinda make that one useless?

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Well he does say it's used against truck and light armor, not against modern tanks.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Still works like a charm.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I will use this information about the HEAT ammunition to further advance my tanking career in arma 3. Thanks :p (i had no idea what it was)

10 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

A little knowledge goes a long way.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Up vote for arma 3

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Thanks so much @OP. I love these posts.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'll work on more!

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Why depleted uranium?

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Its dense, which concentrates energy, its also flammable which helps, and 1/2

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

it self forges, which means when/if it breaks when it hits, it turns into more sharp fragments that continue to penetrate. 2/2

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Also, other countries like Germany use tungsten instead, which supposedly works just/almost as well. But the US has tons of DU around so...

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You used to be a tank commander until you took a SABOT to the knee?

10 years ago | Likes 274 Dislikes 0

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You don't need to capitalize sabot. It's French, not an acronym.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Old habits. And it could be an acronym. Super Awesome Baddass Ordnance Thing.

10 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

I love this comment so much I want to bake it a cake.

10 years ago | Likes 127 Dislikes 0

Question: I haven't seen 'sabot' in all-caps before, even referring to sheathing around projectiles. In military use is it also an acronym?

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Just how I've seen it in briefings before.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Just don't steal his sweet roll.

Just one question: Is there Wifi in your tanks? Must be hard to browse Imgur on a mobile connection in a metal shell.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You know what? Surprisingly good reception in there. And I have unlimited data.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

You actually can hook up a phone to the intercom to play music.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Serious question here.. why is a Leopard 2A4's armor not sloped at all? I mean.. easy pen..

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You'd have to ask ze Germans.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I think I read somewhere that the composite armor Leopards use doesn't work well when the rounds hit at an angle. Possibly Wikipedia.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm gonna need a banana or two for some of these pictures.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I know. I took these before I joined Imgur.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Is there some concern about firing SABOT rounds over the heads of friendly positions because of the discarding pedals? What is the protocol?

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The petals can be deadly, so we wouldn't fire main gun overhead unless there was no other choice.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

To my understanding if the friendlies are close it's also very dangerous due to the pressure from the gun firing.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Also true. Blast injuries are no joke.
