Made a brine that I never tried before with ginger root, but hole cloves, oranges and bay leaves.
I brined this 19lbs bad boy for 24 hours!
I woke up at 04:30 to get this on by 5. I then went back to bed. Thankfully, baby spice allowed me to sleep in and he didn’t wake up till close to 8!
Here it is after 4 hours. This was bad because in years past the Traeger wasn’t working well. I cleaned out the augur and fire pot over the summer and now it is more efficient.
I let it stay in a “keep warm” setting for close to an hour to prolong the cooking and got it down and then injected it one more time with butter and cooked the skin!
Just listen to the sizzle!
The best turkey I’ve ever made.
Yes, Felix got a bit of turkey too.
I placed the carcass in the garage refrigerator so I can make turkey dumpling soup. My dog would not leave me alone and made sure to get some of the drippings as I was trying to get it to the refrigerator.

I did my brine with apple cider, allspice, herbs and garlic. It was good
bullestock
Did you put hot sauce on it?
Hotsauceman
Sadly no
dirtybarnacles
Your tukey looks like it sent you a risky text from across a crowded room and is waiting for you to see it.

Butthole cloves really make a turkey shine
PubMed12927120suckssobad
Buttload of cloves i understand, but why is there a thumb in the brine?
menemyr
I read this and thought, "Oh hey, another Elden Ring player."
CanIGetSomeExtraSalt

BBQ'd one once on a Weber on the front lawn. Separated the coals into 2 rows on the bottom, and added 12 briquttes every 1/2 hr to maintain temp. Delicious.

whoatherebigfella
Funny you should say that. Seeing those turkey legs hanging off the side of the pan, reminded me of someone tiredly getting out of bed, spent from a night of “activity”.

Nice cook!
mikeatike
Dang that looks good.

#2 what are butthole cloves?
railgrinder
Spatchcock style for the win!
Ilurklikekirk
This. Especially when smoking a bird. Keeps the cooking even. Best method for turkey, IMO.
JackOLoser
I wish literally anyone in my family knew how to cook a turkey.
TheFastpaws
Looking good!
hullabanana
Why is your oven on fire, or is that some mad bbq? Uk here, never seen one.
Hotsauceman
Oh! That’s a Traeger grill/smoker. Since it is mostly a grill I needed more smoke so those are smoking tubes. You put in pellets into the tube, put in a fire starter square and light it and it gets the pellets going.

Fucking censorship. Should be asshole cloves.
whoatherebigfella
They should have a word conversion bot to fix those instances where someone self censors themselves. Imgur pretty much lets us say anything.

#8 Does anyone see what I see on the Turkey or do I need to get my mind out of the gutter and brushed with soap?

Tell your dog I said 'hi'.

He got a belly rub.

I wouldn’t enjoy my parents being together anywhere, especially my house because they’ve been insanely awkward and avoidant of each other since the divorce. I hate playing messenger between two adults that were married for over 20 years and should be capable of communicating with each other.
Hotsauceman
I should have written as “both sets”. It was my parents (mom and step dad) and my in-laws
mikeatike
My parents hadn't spoke to each other in 30 years. Dad asked if it would be ok to visit her in the hospital. She said no. Well she was the one dying of cancer, she gets what she wanted. He sounded sad when I told him, but he was the idiot that cheated on her.
noOpeeee
(If they would be good at communicating they wouldn’t get divorced ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
slimvictor
I would hesitate to assume that all people who get divorced are bad at communicating.
WhoSaidYouCouldEatTheLastCookie
only bird I've roasted whole was a pheasant and honestly it was such hard work I CBA doing it again
DoomyDoomyDoom
Would you mind sharing the recipe? I'm thinking about smoking a turkey sometime soon-ish

Turkey
Hotsauceman
What are you using to smoke?
DoomyDoomyDoom
A pit-boss combo pellet smoker/grill, so the smoker doesn't have the biggest size, but its big enough for a majority of things
Hotsauceman
Would you like the brine recipe or how I smoked it?
DoomyDoomyDoom
Both, if you don't mind. That brine sounds fantastic!
Hotsauceman
I spatchcocked it and smoked it for about 9 hours. My smoker is also a grill so the smoker isn’t great so I added smoking tubes and lit them to add more smoke. I used a fire starter square to help get the pellets in the tubes going
