I'd have ordered straight Johnny then. Then had a friend order a coke separate from me. Then mixed them in front of his fucking face.

insomniac24x7
What about bartenders that suggest cheap vodka since it will be mixed anyway?
We're talking bourbon here
Same thing. Seriously, you can tell. Mixed with top shelf they're smoother and tastier.
I would never suggest someone order a cheaper alcohol if they're asking for a mixed drink and I aways ask if they have a preference.
But if it was at my house and someone wants to mix Johnny walker blue with coke I'd sway them to some jack instead.
But the point is if you don't think you should toss the cheap shit in there, why would the drink not be improved with the good shit?

I hate alcohol snobs.
It's not a snob thing, it's a hangover thing. Better the booze, less chance of being hungover.
its not a hangover thing. you are wrong.
1metalnation
I am an alcohol snob, and that's untrue. Hangovers don't care the quality of the booze you drank, just the amount
Same. Unless you're buying what I'm drinking, please do us all a favor and keep your opinions to yourself. Drink what makes you happy.

I do haha I'm not big on the taste of alcohol so I get the "girly drinks" as my coworkers call it, I don't care they're delicious.
Same here.I CAN sip Jameson up.I don't because I'd prefer really enjoy what I'm drinking, not just tolerate it on account of my alocholism

Some nice alcohols are hard to get and due to limited production. If someone mixes it in a sweet cocktail, it won't taste much different 1/2
Than if you were to use something cheaper. It's one less pour for someone who would appreciate it the way it was intended to be consumed.
flamingflamingo
The problem is that if you don't enjoy drinking straight liquor then you're a damn scrub. Apparently.
InaneOctopus
You can taste nice bourbon in lots of things, but coke usually covers up the differences between quality bourbons and say Old Crow.
I don't have a lot of bourbon experience but if its anything like my "no you just haven't tried a good red wine" experience...
Not a problem just as a connoisseur you just want people to enjoy it for its flavor and when you mix it, the mixer usually overpowers it.
I had this discussion with a gin connoisseur because I like to mix gin with ginger ale rather than tonic. I still enjoy the flavours though!

There are many drinks that can take advantage of good alcohol. Low sweetness lemon and grapefruit can perfectly frame good rum or Mezcal
Well every drink benefits from good alcohol!
But I mean you can use certain mixers to make the best parts of the alcohol pop. For example, I like mezcal, and I mix it with no sugar(1/2)
(2/2) grapefruit soda, lime, and honey, and it lets the smokiness sit down and take a nap in your mouth
and I find it really hard to enjoy alcohol neat with friends. Some non-overpowering mixer makes the alcohol worlds more casual.
