just saw this horrifying video about how for-profit dialysis centers are killing people by applying the fast-food mentality to chronic, life-sustaining care. I was gonna summarize it but it's actually too depressing: https://youtu.be/08eVXNsta4M what the video doesn't touch in is how this is also absolutely a class thing too. rich people can afford safe dialysis treatment
This is it. This is literally the only platform Dems need. Hammer on this endlessly and STFU about identity politics that push away majority voters and you will see a landslide unlike any other.
They've all been $199.99 for the last two years, ever since the federal subsidy expired. Conveniently, that was right around the time Ratfuck Jr. started making noise about it not being safe or required for healthy adults, so that insurance companies had a basis for not covering it anymore... which they'd already be motivated to do, given that it just jumped a whole order of magnitude.
What I don’t see enough of with all this talk of healthcare, is how much bills are being racked up for the American taxpayer to pay for this long stay in medical facilities that senator turtle is generating
I was injured in a accident, was told I'd never walk again, the two companies at fault had over $35M in insurance coverage, I got no where near $1M. I can walk after 5 years of therapy and I'm not supposed to pickup more than 10 pounds. My late wife got sick, doctors and medicines left us with nothing and I had to go back to work full time. Spinal surgeons warn me that I could easily end up paralyzed continuing to work but this is America I have no choice I also have to take care of my kids.
Forcing the entire medical industry into a regulated structure again could do the same thing. But there is no interest by those in power to do that. They been captured by and their allegiance is to whoever donates the most to their campaign funds.
If the whole medical industry is nationalised, then there wouldn't be a need for medical insurance companies. Because all medical coverage would be paid for by the Government through taxes. The Government would be the insurance company, and the hospitals, and the drug companies.
That's the dream, but is absolutely not going to happen in your lifetime or your children's lifetime. Medicare for all is something that there's a glimmer of hope for, that could (through some amount of small miracles) get through congress.
Medicare for all IS nationalizing the industry. We don't need insurance companies that barely cover us and try to deny everything. If a doctor says you need something it should be covered.
No, it nationalises the access to medical care. Which is a big differance. Because private companies still own the industry its just getting paid by the government when it comes to your bill. Fully nationalising the sector, then the Government owns every step in the chain.
Unfortunately this is not quite a complete picture of bankruptcy.
In Canada Illness, injury, and health-related problems are the #3 cause of bankruptcy (19%); proceeded by unemployment, layoff, reduction in pay (31%), e.g., if you are ill you often can't work.
Single payer systems are way better than the whatever the hell you call the survival of the richest going on in the US, just don't expect illness not to have dire financial repercussions.
So my total annual cost would be equal to my current monthly premium payment. Saving me over 20k a year. And that just premium payments. No deductible or co-pay or co-insurance. No out of pocket for luxury bones. No more having my insurance fight paying the ER when I show up with stroke symptoms saying I should have gone to a urgent care first. Can we please.
Healthcare for all would eliminate a significant source of power that employers have over their people; that's a huge reason why it's opposed so strongly.
My problem is I HAVE insurance. The copay et al. Means for the first 3 months of the year I'm paying medical bills like I'm uninsured, yet I'm still paying premiums for something I don't have. Co-pays of more than $100/yr are fraud, breach of contract and just...stoopid.
This is barely even a joke. Years ago, I had to go to the walk-in clinic to have a piece of glass taken out of my heel. $375. For a couple minutes' work. I waited longer for the doctor on duty to show up than I did for the work to get done.
I sliced my finger badly. My RN coworker thought I needed stitches. I went to urgent care just to see. 800 for a band-aid and finger splint. My boss made me give him the bill because he wanted to pay with the company credit card.
This in the graphic has NOTHING TO DO with universal healthcare.
It has EVERYTHING TO DO with price regulation, which the US doesn't really have thanks to the pharma lobbying the government. Look at what it says: "price the US government paid."
This is why *legitimate* healthcare cannot exist in the US: the BASE costs are far too high for an insurance company to cover, so all that can survive is extremely restrictive and predatory borderline-scam companies.
TL;DR US politicians need to crack down, stop taking cash from pharma corps & hospital-adjacent industries, and regulate prices AT THE BASE LEVEL so that healthcare is actually viable.
This is like fighting for $10 an hour minimum wage to me. If this is your line in the sand, your starting point for bargaining, rather than FEDERALIZED MEDICAL INSURANCE, aka the system literally all of our peers have, then you're telling me and the opposition that you are beginning in the middle and willing to compromise further. You're telling us all that you're complicit with the current system.
But Imgurians love to cry "CENTRIST TRASH!!!" at everyone BUT Democratic politicians.
As election season approaches, look at what the cat dragged in: political posts with Democrats calling for compromise already. That's what this is, a weak wristed reply to the opposition's rhetoric that suggests to Repugs that they could start there and whittle us all the way back down to nothing worth just 8 Dems that cross the aisle, and we all know they have gotten those 8 to cross through fascism so they'll gladly cross through status quo governance.
I mean, why wouldn't they? You never punish them when they go up for reelection and they cross the aisles politically. You'd need to primary them, but the DNC claimed "no valid, viable primary candidates were found to run against Schumer in 2022" after claims of pundits in the party SWEARING THAT THEY'D DEPOSE HIM IN HIS NEXT PRIMARY. So the unelected DNC just... didn't let you primary him. Ta-da.
That's the party. That's status quo governance. That's complicity in the broken system.
You can't fix it by backing it again and again. You can only fix complicity with a system by deposing that system and the functions that allowed the complicity. If you don't, then you will just continually keep reelecting members of the same regime that already harmed you and defeat your own self preservation. I don't care how many times you reelect Hakeem Jeffries, he'll never move the country further Left because he's paid to do the opposite. (D) means nothing. Fetterman (D) exists. Wake up.
Worldwide we have the most expensive healthcare. There's a concern that trying to implement universal healthcare will fuck us up. I get it. I don't trust our government too much, but literally every option humanity has tried world wide, is better than the stuff we currently have.
The only thing it will fuck up is corporations profits. Pharma for obvious reasons, but every other corporation as well. Low wages are suffered, due to not wanting to lose healthcare; people stay in shit jobs for the same reason. If you remove the shackles that corporation provided healthcare creates, you force corporations to actually have to pay staff and do better. Which will lower profits.
The only thing universal healthcare is going to fuck up, is the insane profits of pharma and insurance companies. While there may be a slight decrease in employment for those who work for these vultures, but my best would be, that the real health industry, hospitals and such, will grow and hire. As long as there are reasonable people (and that might be the real issue) setting boundaries for what is considered medical 'needs', and not vanity needs, my best is, that it will work fine.
Yeah, veneers on teeth arent really a thing anywhere else in the world. Like my american cousins, their insurance covers that too. So they all have the "american" smile. Not here in the Nordics. ANd now few of them moved to the Nordics. Suddenly you have to pay it from your own purse when delaminating... and it is not cheap.
Funny, I often wondered about these 'perfect' teeth, that so many Americans flash about. Even with braces, it is hard to make teeth THAT perfect. A fine example of what should NOT be covered by universal health care.
strangely, America is the only western country that hasn't been able to figure out how universal health care works. it's also the only country where medical bankruptcy is a real event that destroys more people than their health condition.
But you maybe might have to wait slightly longer for a non critical, elective procedure, unlike now where you have to wait 2+ weeks to see a doctor (or over a month if you're a new patient) and thats simply unacceptable because uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh socialism
I have been waiting 4 months so far for a kidney removal. I have cancer. A consult with any kind of specialist will likely be at least a couple months wait. It isn't any faster here.
Neurological disorder triggered by chemo therapy. Symptoms start the end of April. No neuro that would accept my medicaid available until Oct. I was on medicaid exactly 1 year. Now experiencing the same thing because I don’t have Medicare supplements.
Hi! I'm from Sweden. I have M.S. I thought it was annoying waiting an hour for a general doc, who referred me to a specialist later in the day, and after all the tests were done getting my full treatment 3 weeks later. (I now come in every 6 months for follow up treatment, but that's on a rolling schedule.)
How much did you pay? Here in the US, it'd be a far longer wait and tens of thousands of dollars in medical debt. Or if you have health insurance, a confusing in network vs out of network ("these doctors will give us more financially advantageous diagnoses in exchange for us driving business to them") doctor hunt, a far longer wait, and a $3k deductible. Which, for europeans, means "you have to pay this much before the $200 you pay us every month, sick or healthy, actually does anything."
Typically in the nordics, the single visit is 0-40 dollars per visit. And if it cost you anytihing, there is a price ceiling, here in finland it is about 700 euros per year. That is the absolute maximum what you have to pay. many counties doesn't take a fee, but they can if they want to, In my county, it is about 20 per visit, neighboring, smaller county have 0. But Everything is obviously paid via taxes. So everyone pays. Not to insurance companies (that is an option too) but to the state.
No. Universal healthcare does not preclude paid for elective procedures provided on demand - any suggestion it's a barrier is a lie intended to mislead.
Likely a vain hope in a medium and time where it's nigh on impossible to know the proper context and truth of any opinion or statement, especially when discussing U.S insanity.
