I'm gonna go with the award winning directors opinion and not some random chatters. For fucks sake even in this one clip Ann Hathaway, who mind you is also an accomplished actress with similar prestige to Matt Damon, only received one perfect. Also one scene perfect doesn't mean everything was.
Damon is an okay actor. And regardless of an actor's age, it's entirely possible for them to deliver that's exactly what the director is looking for in a single scene.
Nolan is notoriously hard to please in the industry from like every interview I hear about him. I'm not sure if it's gender bias, too small of a sample size.
