This comic titled "Medusa" by Jun Chiu, a student from Taipei, Taiwan, paints an alternate and poignant tale of the Greek gorgon "Medusa." Jun Chiu wrote on their Facebook page "You're just an ordinary girl who is cursed by witchcraft, jailed in the high tower of fairy tales we know." I love Greek mythology, and this beautiful comic struck a chord with me. You can see more of Jun Chiu's work here: https://www.artstation.com/artist/junchiu1996

I dont know why people are hating on this. Even if this is a repost, its the internet. Also i havent seen it before thanks for that @OP
richtus
That was awesome. I also thought it was going to be a photoshopped reimagining of the opening of Prince of Egypt.
vasglorious
Lovely storyboards for a short.

Why does Medusa herself turn into stone at the end?
Orenamik
I think because she cut off her own snake hair.
swatz
So it's a Tangled Romeo and Juliet?

Lorilee2
That was really good. Thanks for that.
kaitekarue
She was also seen as a guardian to women victims as well. She was a perfect example of the dichotomy of gender in views of religion. 1/2
kaitekarue
Oooor so some think. I honestly don't know enough about that theory myself. Just remember reading it as a proposed interpretation for a 2/

Good attitude. I haven't seen it. I appreciate you putting it up. Too many people get upset about unwritten arbitrary standards.

Seems like a Disney movie in the making.
killswich7277

"Stoned"

It was Poseidon who raped her and Athena who cursed her for defiling her temple. She maybe goddess of wisdom but she was prideful.

Its what i was thinking of with the first frames. Has an Atlantis vibe to it with the style
Ballt15m
Exactly what i first thought
DarkZoma
Except without the sad ending and the guy betraying her trust intentionally/unintentionally and then making it up to her.
SioulSeRef
well, I mean, Frozen did have Hanz or whatever his name was. but yeah, it wouldn't end as badly
BixClassy
No. It's perfect the way it is.
johnsonbilliejean1365
Please make the movie?
YourGiddyAunt
I don't know...a whole movie about being stoned? Something more for a different audience, don't you think?
bhaltazar
INFIDELS!
CrimeThinker
The Disney version would surely spin the whole thing with less tragedy in general.
PietroAretino
This was dope.
YoureGoodHouseButYoureCloseButYoureGood
I wish I could draw/paint/illustrate. Not so much that I'm going to put in the time to learn, but still.
SadHedgehog
Same. I just want all the things but have no motivation to work for them :/

Gotta be honest to yourself
MikeySweaters
Lol same tho

Some people seem just born with talent
BoundFenrir
"talent" usually just means you did that thing as a kid, and so you developed the skill before any of your peers were even trying to.
The22ndDoctor
Everyone is born with a talent. Most never realize what their talent is, and spend their lives forcing their bodies to do something else.
magnetude
Skill is 20% talent and 80% hard work
zebzebzeb
Yeah. I've been drawing constantly for ten+ years, but I still get the "I wish I was as talanted as you". Then start practising u dumb fuck
mac821
That seems... harsh. Disappointing
CrimeThinker
"seem"

The story of medusa is very tragic. She went to Athena's temple and was raped by Zeus. She was cursed by athena for this incident.
epicgamespro7512000
And Zeus is supposed to be the father of all gods
candiduscorvus
I think it was a different god but yeah.
HerMagestyTheQueen
She was raped by Poseidon
evilprinsess1
She was raped by Poseidon and then caused by Athena for defiling her temple
ShadowFalem
Poseidon not zeus
Imnotacat112
The actual origin of the character is as one of the daughters of Phorcys and Ceto, both of whom were monsters (1)
Imnotacat112
(2) and Medusa was originally just another monster, until another writer got a hold of the story and changed it
Imnotacat112
(3) to fit the narrative that all the gods were terrible, she was not beautiful, she was not raped, you're quoting bad fan fiction
asaboth
what? no
SparrovskyOMG
I think it was Poseidon wasn't it? It doesn't matter. All Greek gods were rapists.
JasonThorn
All Greek gods/goddesses possessed many of humanity's worst qualities, so the Greeks could identify with them more.
xeno426
Yeah, it was Poseidon. It also doesn't help that old Greek for "rape" isn't really distinct from "sex".
Imnotacat112
yes, in most cases its mistranslated, often willfully as more than one author has had beef with one of the greek gods
6Oh4
Yeah Zeus was a fucking dick.
OPsFather
No Zeus was a fucking Medusa.
AlaskanPipeliner1
Dicks fuck pussies and occassionally assholes.

Didn't he more or less fuck everybody?
FedExForExplosives
*everything and yes
CommanderJellybaby
i thought Poseidon did just to spite Athena considering they had a rivalry
AndromedaNichole
Possibly? I know their rivalry and hate for each other started ever since they competed for whom would be the patron god of Athens.
CommanderJellybaby
yeah that is true. I think Medusa worked at Athena's temple and That is why Poseidon raped her
SilentScript
Also wouldn't stop using it either.
Crazytrain77
Imnotacat112
in defense of that, the one to overthrow all the former gods was always the youngest of the king of the gods
AndromedaNichole
Ya! She was a beautiful priestess in the temple of Athena. When she was raped by Poseidon, instead of taking pity on her, Athena cursed her.
SacredSpirit123
People are saying that the Roman poet Ovid invented that part.
TheMostUnexpectedUsername
Yeah, Poseidon and Athena hate each other, so when he desecrated her temple, she took it out on Medusa.
ChickenVegetas
Oh yeah. Sorry, my Greek mythology is a little rusty. Thanks for the 411
AndromedaNichole
She became queen of the gorgons, along with her two sisters, Sthenno, Euryale. However Medusa was the only one born mortal of the three.
SaltyTurnip
I sure hope this is on my test tomorrow. You teach Greek classics way better than my professor
AndromedaNichole
I would give anything to teach Greek mythology! I would do it for fun! I had a Greek/Roman studies prof who wasn't very good either.
IPutAHexOnYou4c6f7665206d65
thank you for saying 'gorgon' and not 'mermaid' <3
Matdredalia
It scares me that people do that.
AndromedaNichole
Do...people do that? Lol maybe I just over assumed it was common knowledge she was a Gorgon. Are there mermaids even in Greek myth?
AndromedaNichole
I know there's sirens and nymphs.
NanoSwarmer
it can also be interpreted that athena gave her a power so that no man would ever be able to hurt her again. I've heard it told both ways.
Bend3
Based on how Athena is portrayed, its likely both. A "gift' that is also a punishment due to Athena's jealousy
SnowMeowPlush
Athena was in all respects a male. Her actions and decisions were in line with all the other male gods, also only Greek god not from sex.
SnowMeowPlush
No, she was punishing her for getting raped in her temple. That version has been pushed by tumblr hard, its no where near correct.
Bend3
I looked deeper into this and the original mentioning of Medusa was that she was born a monster. The rest was added about 200 years later.
