That and rapid acceleration pushing all the fuel to the back of the tank. It's funny watching my gauge go from 1/2 to 1/4 and back to 1/2.

Is it because the tank is wider in the middle? Float could only measure height of fuel not volume?

Fuel gauges are chronic liars anyway. Just run out once, and you'll know how big your tank actually is.

My 1st car, ‘84 S10 Blazer, had a 20 gallon tank and 20 notches. 16 y/o me was convinced each notch was a gallon. 16.5 y/o me learned better

Yup. Good fuel economy from those though, generally speaking. I used to get 53mpg all day ragging the hell out of mine.
