Russian Orthodox Church the leading cause for that? Weren't Russian Orthodox Christians victims of unspeakable atrocities for the sole
purpose of destroying said religion in order to turn Soviet Russia into an atheist state?

right, but Atheism doesn't have a holy text (mis)used to excuse such actions. his belief system didn't tell him to kill, his insanity did
you know. like everyone who's done bad things. all systems of faith are amoral inherently, it's how they're used that we judge.
Actually his beliefs in communism and the State did encourage him to kill in order to purge religion which was seen as a cancer or weakness.
Last I checked, Communism as a concept doesn't call for the mass genocide of populations. He was sick, his justifications are immaterial
