It’s important to note this is not exactly accurate. The 1st amendment absolutely doesn’t protect you from being ARRESTED. It’s supposed to protect people from being legally punished for saying most things but police often arrest people without just cause and interpretation of a lot of these rules can swing dramatically in different political climates/states.
Look at the lady who used the Luigi line & was arrested. In another state or under the current president it could go very differently…

No, JuriKeller is right, what you say is NOT TRUE. You write "anything" pro-Palestine, and that is a lie. And "losing citizenship" is a lie as well. You're overgeneralising and sensationalising. When you apply for German citizenship as a fugitive and you're standing on rooftops screaming "From the River to the Sea" waving a Hamas flag then your application for citizenship (!) might be revoked. It highly depends on what exactly you say or do, so please do not sensationalise.

I've seen people post this in response to US governments literally punishing people for their speech. I've seen people post this when folks are talking about the aspirational goal of free speech, separate from legal rights. I think that people don't always quite understand entirely what Randall is saying here.

Yes, unclear communication deserves criticism. This comic isn't unclear. People misunderstand it because they are idiots, because they are conclusion-shopping, because they are bad actors, etc. But people aren't misunderstanding this because it is unclear.
So, again, none of that is criticism against the comic or the message itself. It's criticism against people, which is fair.

I am endlessly frustrated by people on here saying that "freedom" doesn't mean freedom from consequences, in general, which is nonsensical no matter how you look at it. That is precisely what freedom is. But the 1st amendment of the USA's constitution is not the universal and final definition of freedom nor of free speech, and people seem to have a hard time grasping the idea that there could be any other.

There is no such thing as truly consequence-free speech - nor should there be, because other people also have freedom of speech to tell you if you're being a dick. And freedom of association to refuse to have anything to do with you if you insist on using your freedom of speech to be a giant walking turd.

I think you have point but it easily come across as wrong. because conesquences here is all grouped together.
Freedom is the abilty tob e able to make a choices without anyone preventing (regulations) you that choices. However the consequence DIRECTLY made from that choice is not protected from that freedom
So in free speech the government are not allowed to restrict that choices from you or punish you from it (as the threat of punishment is a restriction)
But people dont have to listen to you

Those "consequences" are different. the people not listening to you is are the direct impact from what you are saying. Which is the consequences you are NOT protected againt. . but the government punshing you is a regulation you ARE protected against.

Indeed. And it goes even further than that. Private people and companies can discriminate against you based on what you say in ways that the government isn't allowed to, not as a direct result of what you say but because they dislike your words. In contrast, they're not [supposed to be] legally permitted to discriminate against you in certain business decisions based on protected categories like race and gender.

But at one point the extention of your freedom imposes on other peoples freedom. and are cut off line is reached. Infinite freedom would imply the lack of other people freedom
