For the record, part of the failure is due to our atrocious voter participation record (roughly 50% and the worst in the developed world)

But that would actually be better for the established large parties. 3rd parties don't have the built in news cycle, ad dollars, or (1/2)

name recognition. They would get far fewer votes. Nearly everyone knows Clinton and Trump, but less people know Johnson, Stein or McMullin.
