Dilapidated to Glorious

The Petrie Building is Canada’s last remaining example of a pre-1890 machine stamped metal clad building.
The Petrie Building has been a downtown Guelph icon since opening in 1882. It was designed by architect John Day for businessman A.B. Petrie, who ran a pharmacy on the ground floor.

It wasn't designed to shed water very well, so the elements took a toll on it. This is how it looked in 2014 when I walked by it almost every day. I always wished someone would take care of it and restore it to it's former glory.

Renovation and restoration: Tyrcathlen Partners aquired the building in 2015 and were enthusiastic about restoring the interior, but couldn't justify the expense of restoring the exteriour. Enter David J Knight who worked tirelessly on fundraising efforts. Through art shows, community fundraisers and $100,000 from the Architectural Conservancy of Ontario, work on the facade was started.

3 days ago, the facade was finally revealed. The newly renovated building now homes a bridal store on the top floors. Brothers Brewing Co, Osmow's Grill Mediterranean food are located on the ground floor.
