What I don't get is why they can't just use a big-ass parachute!

I think it might get stuck in a tree or some power lines if they do that. At least that's my experience.

Because you can't land at target with parachutes and if you do it is very difficult, also that adds loads and loads of weight.

I don't buy the weight argument. I doubt that a chute weighs more than the thruster tubes, guidance system and above all fuel needed.

Trust me, those chutes weigh a lot, they also have to be very big to create lots of drag. Oh well, SpaceX can do what they want.
