Had a little patch of milkweed in the field next to our house when I was 12. Found a Monarch caterpillar and put it in a tiny glass box with a twig and it immediately made its chrysalis. A couple of weeks later it emerged and I let it go off to Mexico (I was in Michigan.).

we did this as a 4th grade project, it was super interesting, now I can't remember though, do they migrate back yo where they were hatched? or is that all some deep instinct thing?

No. The ones that fly to Mexico do not return. They will lay eggs and there are 2-3 generations on the trip back north.
They do seem to figure out where specifically to go though. Not sure how specific though (ie, the city or the address I am at )

ok, looked it up, yeah, they aren't like salmon or w/e, they won't come back to a specific place of birth, they are drawn to specific places though, but that's more about the environment.

I'm now curious how specific the location is to where the original came from. Ie if I release one in the local garden will it's descendants come back there or to the area?
