As a millennial I do find the year gaps a bit jarring. But also: is it just me or do the culture gaps between the periods not feel that significant?
2008 to today definitely has a lot of changes, but at least to my assessment that 17 year gap feels less significant than even the 10 year gap from 1998 to 2008. Again the changes from 2008 to today are real, but I just feel like the cultural shifts aren't as major between decades as they were in the 70s through to 2000.

When I think about the 70s/80s/90s, it feels like there were discreet jumps. You had a thing, then you got a new one and put the old one aside and it becomes a relic. But around 2005, it feels like we changed to a state of constant improvement. You have a ps3, which came out in 2007, but was last updated this month

I think you're right. Going from the 80s (home computers and video game consoles were new) to the 90s (Internet/world wide web kicks off) to the 00s (broadband, cell phones become ubiquitous) was a huge change, compared to technology changes in many earlier decades, especially with information sharing. 1998 to 2008 went from "cell phones are luxury items/computers are bulky" to "everyone has an Internet-connected computer in their pocket".

There has been enough gap that some refer to games we had in the 90s and early 2000s, such as Half Life, as "Boomer Shooters" cuz Boomer equals anything perceived as old. Despite an actual Boomer shooter would be the Vietnam War

Probably, the only thing I disagree with is the cultural shifts, they got even faster in my opinion, for example us old gen Z have very little in common with young gen z'ers, much less with Gen Alpha and probably even less so in the near future since 2024 is the start of gen beta.

well 2008 had the financial crisis and the first iphone released in 2007. that time right there really marked a shift but yea it doesn't really feel that significant right now. we are in a weird spot right now of stagnation with little innovation due to people fucking things up more.

I feel the same way. But that might just be our age and experience. The older I get the every change feels less significant because you're kind off hardened I guess. Also, As I get older I no longer follow up on all the trends but just live my life like I learned to do it back when. Something to consider, the first smartphone (iPhone 1) came out in 2007. The current omnipresence of smartphones has definitely changed our lives forever.

Right. The Xbox 360 will be 20 years old this November.
When the PS2 launched, people already considered the SNES to be retro, but gap between the SNES & PS2 system releases was 9 years & 3 months. We are roughly twice as far from the PS3's launch as the PS2 was from the SNES.

Considering the popularity of PS1 and sometimes PS2 aesthetics atm, I'd say it's 3. The world isn't ready for 2007 to be retro yet. It's still just old.

It's been two for decades, NES was Retro during N64, SNES during GC.
The 360 came out in 2005, WII and PS3 in 2006. They are two gens ago so fall under retro.. people already talk about the Wii as if it's retro.. and that terrifies me.

That's not necessarily true; the only people not ready to acknowledge 2007 as "retro" are Millennials who are upset by the idea that they're getting old & no longer the primary demographic for PG-13 content. Gen Z and Gen Alpha both consider games & movies released back then to be retro, and most games from back then absolutely have aged fairly poorly compared in both graphics and gameplay standards.

What is it that while we had a massive technologic advancement, I don't really feel like the cultural / fashion difference is all that big. 2003 was pre-smartphone era. Apple introduced the first all-screen smartphone in 2007. I think these devices changed the world a tad bit

There were still rock bands. Let me explain, so at some point a few years ago I was looking at what kinds of bands some rock festivals were having these days. They're not rock festivals anymore. Most artists they have now are pop and rap, maybe possibly a metal band or 2. BaCk In My DaY rock festivals had rock bands, and maybe a couple metal bands. I don't recognise the festivals I went to back in the 2000's. Well, I still go to one, but it's a metal festival, and it's changed a bit too.
