Numb

FP edit: really did not expect this to blow up. I agree with a lot of the most popular comments, it really feels a lot more like just nothing most of the time, with bouts of anxiety and self-loathing. In fact I would say sadness barely even makes an appearance except on bad days. And yes there are good days, too. The difference between chronic depression and normal "feeling down" though is that those good days are fewer and further between.

For those suffering from it, please find a good professional support network. You probably already know that but it doesn't hurt to repeat it. I have a good network and am doing fine overall, don't worry about me. medication helps, but only if it's the right medication, and you don't miss any doses. Make sure you spend the time (and, I know, money...) to get it properly dialed in with a good psychiatrist, and recognize that your needs can change over time. My own best advice there is don't accept negative side effects that degrade your quality of life. If it helps with the anxiety, but makes you gain weight and hurts your self image, or takes away the joy of good days, it's not helping and you need to find something else that will help you in the long run.

P.S., for those who don't suffer from depression and are seeing this, don't ask "what's wrong". People who suffer from chronic depression don't need to have a reason to feel depressed, and they don't like being pestered to talk about it. The best you can do is just provide moral support and be there for them when they need it. Offer to go do something together, or just hang out to keep their mind off it, but respect their boundaries if they want to be left alone. That's the most helpful thing you can do.

Where's the "disappointed you woke up at all" part?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Needs a little "disproportioned anger" for me.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Exactly! I also get angry about things, and afterwards I think "wow, there was no reason to get that angry, what just happened?!"

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I've had moments in my life where I don't want to get out of bed to deposit a four figure check. That's when I knew depression is serious.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Not feeling anything sucks so much it just makes it feel like there is nothing enjoyable about life anymore:/

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Enjoy every day, it could be your last. Sounds corny but I've actually died once and almost a second time

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

True. The time I felt most alive was when I was running away from a shotgun and a guard dog.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Needs rage in there somewhere.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Is it ironic that self-loathing is "beating yourself up" and is located in the crotch?

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

something something penis size

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Now isntead of them being neatly stacked up have them all swirling in and out in all directions.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I feel isolation in my feet too.

Up the anxiety a bit

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Of my depressive periods, some have been defined by sadness, more have been defined by crippling anxiety, but the longest are the "dull" 1/2

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Ones. These are by far the worst. You barely feel anything- physical or emotional. You lose a sense of being human.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

And the worst is that the dull is so subtle that for me, it takes a few hours, sometimes a day, to realise that I'm fully immersed >

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

> in Dull.

Whatever it is man, it isn't something anybody else experiences the exact same way. If you feel week, remember your reason or lack there of

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Speaking for myself, self-loathing rides a little higher than sadness, but yeah. Hang in there, @OP. But not like that, you know? Fight.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

What do you feel when you smoke weed though?

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

hungry.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

yup

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Anxiety and mini panic attacks.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Now i know that youre not suppoed to be washed with whites

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You left out crippling, permanent exhaustion you can't remedy. At least in my experience.

9 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 1

hard to include the exhaustion in an area chart since it's more like 100% exhaustion on top of everything else...

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Exactly this. Just spent the last 5-6 days in my bed sleeping on and off. My boyfriend doesn't understand it and I dunno how to explain.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Have him put on a 75-100lb rucksack. Ask him to go through an entire day without taking it off, and imagine that constantly. 1/2

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

That's how it felt for me, at any rate. 2/;2

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Dude. Yes. Exhaustion/fatigue is absolutely a huge part of it. Fucking sucks.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Right? Fucking hell it annoys me how much energy other people have.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I described it like wearing a 75lb rucksack that I couldn't take off.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

this is how it feels when the depression hits

Needs more 'nothing'

9 years ago | Likes 387 Dislikes 4

Pointlessness too

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Needs a bit more guilt and a Dash of frustration imo.

9 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

I'd say it needs more self loathing

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Yep.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Nah, needs more self loathing and guilt.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

it's a logarithmic scale

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Frustration that you feel the way you do and once upon a time you didn't but doing anything (like getting out of bed) is too much.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Fuck I wish i felt more 'nothing' I mostly live in fear and anxiety.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I feel like it becomes easier to control the fear and anxiety in time, but it just gets replaced with more nothing. So... you'll get there?

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I went from more fear and anxiety, to more nothing...feeling something is still way, way better.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

It's really at least 75% nothing. I think Hemingway was on to something. Our Nada who art in nada...

9 years ago | Likes 93 Dislikes 1

Hemingway was a hurting man all his life and tried so hard to fill the void. But ask not for whom the bell tolls. It tolls for thee.

9 years ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 1

Yeah Hemingway is a long story. I've met his niece. Nice family, but a lot of that hurt runs in the family.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

That sounds more like Seinfeld.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 3

Hemingway wrote some poems and yada yada sucked some dick

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 3

You might want to think before you speak. Maybe you'd understand this better: "No creative inspiration for you!"

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I definitely agree but it's different for everyone. Mine swings between nothing and anger.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

i've been reading the comments, Am i the only one that gets truly massive bouts of directionless rage for no reason? Is that normal?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That depends, did this start sometime between Nov of last year and Jan of this year, and get worse? If so, I think it's the new normal.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Oh mine usually has a direction, but sometimes I just flail in bed due to rage-muscle-spasms.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Don't forget other symptoms such as sleep disturbances, cognitive difficulty, memory and concentration impairment, even physical diseases.

9 years ago | Likes 27 Dislikes 0

Nightmares and panic attacks combined with

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Wait nightmare too? I didn't know about that.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Depending on the severity of depression and the medication/anti depressants involved these are some of the common withdrawal symptoms..

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Yeah, insomnia and memory fog is the worst. It's just so damn difficult to function during the day.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Damn seratonin where u at

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 5

No guarantees, but your body is like a racecar. It's more likely to function properly (ie not be depressed) if it's well maintained.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 4

Prayer also helps, and weight lifting done correctly trumps long distance cardio with regards to positive chemical changes in the brain.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 4

Don't know why you're getting downvoted. This is the best advice here

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It's very reasonable sounding, but considering that every professional in the actual field mentions almost none of that, I call bullshit.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Not only have I read in multiple places that this advice works, I can also say it does from personal experience.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

There's a ton of research literature supporting diet, exercise, socialization, exposure to sunlight, and meditation in reducing symptoms 1/

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

1) that's why the professionals fail to help the depressed, because they don't know anything 2) I am a professional physiologist, so I 1/2

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Nothing is actually worse than feeling sad, because at least sadness is feeling something. Feeling anything is better than nothing at all.

9 years ago | Likes 238 Dislikes 10

Ya, the "nothing" sucks because something good will happen, but I'll be like "This should make me happy. Why can't this make me feel happy".

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Then eventually I'll start to feel guilty that I can't feel happy about it. :c

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I was about to say, mine is usually just nothingness.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The "nothing" makes you start to question your worth and sanity, which is a whole new level of Hell

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

sorry but this is BS. feeling nothing sometimes is the BEST alternative. When everything else is destructive and exhaustively painful...

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 6

Never.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Nah. Pain gives life meaning, nothingness is the overwhelming impression that all of life is meaningless.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I used to feel the same, but it just didn't hold true. The apathy ate away at me, rather than served as a state of emotional rest.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yes, absolutely ! This is the worst ! Not being able to feel anything when my kids were smiling to me was pure torture, like an empty shell.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I understand. I'm so sorry. I don't have kids, but I now that feeling of disconnection from the most important people. It's fucking HELL.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm way better now thanks ! Yes it's hell, worst feeling or "non feeling" ever, depression change you forever, but from darkest day 1/2

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

2/2 always come brighter ones, the important lesson here is never take what you have for granted, enjoy every little beautiful thing in life

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I've been in some really dark places in my life, and there are certainly worse feelings than emptiness. But it is exhausting...

9 years ago | Likes 85 Dislikes 0

Im in the same boat op. Married, trying to make ends meet with debt, day to day, injury. When things overcome you, focus on the small 1/2

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Simple things. Hardly a fix all. Im on rx dealing. But fix your mind on other things vs itself, it helps. In your head, youre the worst

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Things you enjoy. A cup of coffee, your dog, a tv show. When youre stuck in your own head its downhill snowball, try to tune out on 1/3

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

2/2 penis

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Seriously though, I feel you, just couldn't miss that opening

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I think this is dependent on who you are. I know I'd take nothing over the heartbreak my Gran had when her husband died. 50 years together.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The pain of her emotions literally killed her - broken heart syndrome is a real and recognised thing now!

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Even the call of the void?

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

Do you have to pee?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm hearing it loud and clear right now, but I know that it isn't real. Instead, I focus on the feelings that I know for sure are real.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

*hug* Those days, I kinda curl up under a fluffy blanket and maybe cry to sleep. Fatigue makes *it* so much worse.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I'd take feeling nothing over being waterboarded or getting the Theon treatment or getting slow roasted or being stabbed or bit by tarantula

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The way that last sentence was structured had me picturing a tarantula literally stabbing someone with a spear. It was awesome.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Eh, the whole thing about depression is its unrelenting endlessness. Anyone can take awful shit in short bursts.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

When my depression was at it's worst (a long time ago), I had a 2 week lasting blackout. I remember going to school and talking 1/?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

to my family. But I have no memory about a single word that was spoken. I felt nothing besides being in a cloud. Still haunts me. Never 2/3

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

want to go back never. I am sure there are places worse to be, but that was rock bottom for me. 3/3

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I prefer feeling nothing. It's neutral. Too much positive or too much negative isn't healthy.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I use to feel nothing. Came out of it after a breakup. Feel like I got my life back.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I don't think feeling neutral is the same as feeling nothing?

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

As someone who knows well feeling nothing, you'd think I'd agree...but I don't. I wish I did.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

This is worded very confusing, but I hope you understand what I mean.

9 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 2

Actually, as someone who feels nothing most of the time... no I don't. I don't see how feeling bad is better.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

I've found apathy to be more taxing than anything else. It's the single thing that's been fueling the majority of my suicidal thoughts.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

v I don’t understand you. What are you even trying to say?

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

He's saying it's better to feel sad than to feel nothing at all

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Wait. I’m trying to understand him. Back up and start again.
