Night night!

So, on the upside: a happy ending. The dude didn't die. Concussion and maybe a broken jaw. Worker wasn't sued or prosecuted.

Rule number one of a knife fight: don't.
Rule number two: don't show your blade to the opponent until it's inside them.

He demonstrated in a very modern way how you could defeat pikes with sword. Maybe he watched:

Man, your comment was ripped by a bot, got downvoted and the bot is the top comment... This is ass.

Why does his head turn grey...?

Probably censor, the way he seized up instead of collapsing too, proper hit on the back of the neck like that? But Idk, I'm not a doctor but there's a reason they tell you to protect your head AND neck

Its a really, really dogshit camera. Also could be artifacting from uploading.

2 days ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Or a censoring artifact.

Grandpa been around the block and rode in a couple rodeos or got lucky. Perfect swing right to the sweet spot. Kind a guy who you might see wearing a cauldron as a hat.

Okay I watched it again. He definitely knows what he is doing. Just the stance before he jumped into action is pure aura.

Stealth polearm build is OP.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I'm pretty sure we just watched a dude die or at least live the rest of his life as a vegetable. Both arm and leg movements like that indicate brain damage, and rather severe at that.

2 days ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

Fucking terrifying to see. Good for everyone to know to recognize, check breathing and pulse and stay ready to administer CPR. Rough fucking PSA to stumble across.

1 day ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 3

Don't administer CPR, you will leave your friend immobilized under most circumstances. Spinal/nervous system injury means call 911 and do not touch them under any circumstance. {Sorry- sorry- sorry} Scout coming through, and I assume something better has been discovered since I learned.

1 day ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I know there's open debate on the topic, different regions teach different standards and the old standard of prioritizing stabilization of the spinal column is being phased out in favor of assisting circulation, kind of like the standard to give rescue breaths is too. Next decade standards might shift again, unfortunately we don't have data to work off of until people are hurt. :<

"Decerebrate posturing indicates brain stem damage, specifically damage below the level of the red nucleus (e.g. mid-collicular lesion). It is exhibited by people with lesions or compression in the midbrain and lesions in the cerebellum." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abnormal_posturing#Decerebrate

Brain stem damage tracks. The blow lands at the base of his skull.

Goodnight Shirley.

1 day ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Does anybody know what he's saying?

2 days ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Worst case spinal cord injury, fracture of one or more cervicals. For sure he'll have a super headache.

2 days ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It was the humane thing to do.

2 days ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Should've just given him a nice, firm poke to the gut, instead of giving him all that fucking time to THROW the knife.

2 days ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Disarm, disable with minimum force necessary. This was likely excessive force, difficult to watch.

1 day ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 3

It definitely was... taking out a leg, or the arm with the knife would have been enough... A full force swing from over his head, at the other guy's head... excessive.

1 day ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 3

Yup.

1 day ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 3

Hit him so hard he turned grayscale.

2 days ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

More crucially don't start a fight when you're outnumbered three to one

2 days ago | Likes 37 Dislikes 0

Better have eyes on the back of your head

2 days ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

There are at least five pipe wielders there.

2 days ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

(lightheartedly)

2 days ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Looking at the vid, I would wager he had no idea he picked a fight with 3 people and frankly that they only swung once and kind of half assed, well that is his lucky day.

2 days ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

doesnt matter if its half assed when its a 6 foot lever to the back of the head

1 day ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah if he did put effort in it, it would be evidence at the trial.

1 day ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Not only outnumbered, but out-ranged. Dude has a 4 inch blade and facing off against 3 guys with quarterstaves. This was never going to end well for him.

2 days ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Dropped like a turd from a tall cow’s ass.

2 days ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

You can analyze this all about ranges of weapons and such but the real moral here is don't attack someone with friends that are willing to go to bat for you.

2 days ago | Likes 287 Dislikes 1

We need to put this one into Deadliest Warrior for an in-depth exploration.

Embrace the pun! For there is nothing to fear.

1 day ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Flanking bonus.

1 day ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yeah I feel like the Odds were the determining factor here - I wouldn't want to fight 7 guys with knives even if i was armed with a huge pipe.

2 days ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

its stupid to go up against a spear unless your really know what youre doing, and its still very stupid to do. its unbelievably stupid to not know what youre doing and going up against several spears that have you surrounded.

2 days ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Spears are terrible in isolation. If pre-slug there really wanted to fight instead of just posture he would have grabbed it with one hand and pulled it towards and to the side of himself - spear holder then has two options: 1. Let go, meaning no weapon or 2. Hold on, meaning he gets pulled into stabbing range.

This was nothing to do with spear/polearm vs knife but idiotic tube warden vs 4 not idiots

1 day ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

You sound very confident in your extremely faulty understanding. Spears work very well in isolation. It’s takes a skilled person with a sword or similar to take down a moderately competent spear user.

The real downside to spears is they are a pain to carry around or do anything other than fight with.

The reason spears are often seen in groups in historical context is that they go from strong to OP with numbers.

Spears remained the default weapon for most of human history for a reason.

1 day ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I've fought in mock medieval battles, my experience is very different to yours. Knock it to the side, step inside range, and it's all over unless they rapidly backpedal, and even then they are off balance. In this instance it's not even a proper spear, it's more like a large staff, which is even more limited.

Spears were used in large groups because they require very little training, are cheap to produce, and are effective in large numbers *particularly* against cavalry and charges.

1 day ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

tend to agree. theres a reason they went and make spikier spears with more sharp bits

1 day ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

More quarterstaff than spear but the point (ha!) stands.

1 day ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It was an iffy prospect one-on-one if the guy with the pipe was serious about it, doing it surrounded is just insane

2 days ago | Likes 47 Dislikes 1

There are many stories that end with someone doing a headcount on the number of friends someone has on hand and deciding to back down.

2 days ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

And multitudes more where they don't!

1 day ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

yes but sane people rarely wield knives against aluminum pipers

2 days ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 0

Oh, had the knife guy actually attacked then he could have taken 2-3 of them out easily. That pipe was a terrible choice of weapon that just accidentally got a crit success.

2 days ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 14

We all roll a nat-20 at some time

2 days ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The Quarterstaff would like a word. If at all competent you could mess up a guy with a knife easily.

2 days ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 2

It is hard to say exactly what would happen here as there was only the one attack that was made in earnest and I doubt that anybody had any actual training in a weapon.

2 days ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It's entirely likely that the guy with a pipe might break the guy's rib while the knife guy charges in and stabs him. Knife wounds are no joke - like they say, in a knife fight the loser dies in the street and the winner dies on the surgeon's table.

2 days ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Quarterstaffs are light, quick, responsive weapons. That pipe is none of those. I am not against staves, just those in particular.

A knife is also a bad matchup against an unexperienced staff user. They can just dive inside your effective range and stab you repeatedly to death in moments. His friends would barely have time to react before he would be mortally wounded.

1 day ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 4

Note I said "competent". I've messed around with a staff for a bit and would have felt confidant in that situation I'd come away unscathed.

1 day ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My qualm is not with the skill of the individuals, even though that also factors, but that the metal pipe on display is clearly a very suboptimal weapon unlike normal staff weapons.

Ignoring that they got a lucky hit in, they would arguably be safer and more effective just using their fists and feet.

1 day ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Aluminum pipes would have all of that? And he could just jab to the face and fuck him up

1 day ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Look how awkwardly they wield the pipes. Look how he could not keep hold it up and drop the tip to the ground. Look how slow the strike from behind is as if its a massive object.

Those things are heavy, slow and unwieldly and the guy with the knife is like a step or two away. Have you seen how quickly a normal person can stab with a knife? Once in the stomach is already a critical injury, 10 times? You are lucky if you live long enough to see an ambulance.

This matchup is not even close.

1 day ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

I hope not, but... Could legit be dead based on strike location.

Homeboy introduced a deadly weapon into the mix. If he is dead, that's on him.

2 days ago | Likes 80 Dislikes 4

Yes, it was likely deserved, but I don't really wanna watch people causally die.

2 days ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 2

100%. They way he was knocked out the absolute least and minimum would be some form of brain damage and a possible broken skull.

2 days ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Any time you see a blow to the head dropping the recipient in one go, there’s a strong chance you’re looking at a TBI. With an object as aweapon? Almost a certainty.

2 days ago | Likes 27 Dislikes 0

They guy that hit him probably did not mean to kill him.

1 day ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah, I really did not need to see that.

2 days ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

I hope not, I got this from reddit

2 days ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 2

Based on what looks like is gonna turn into a decerebrate posture as soon as he hits the ground, damage to the brain stem at least. He's probably not living a good life now, if he did survive.

2 days ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Did some Lonely Digging and found the dude had a concussion and potentially a broken jaw - according to community and local updates. Worker wasn't sued or prosecuted as it was a case of 'lawful self defence and public intervention'

1 day ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Ouch.

1 day ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Hopefully not but also, play stupid games, win stupid prizes. Either way that was a solid hit and he went to sleep, and that's never a good sign for the sleeper.

2 days ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 1

Hitting that spot means hitting to kill.

2 days ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Decerebrate posturing. If he's not dead, he is in a very bad shape.

2 days ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 1

Yeah notice the way the feet and hands curl in? That's a brain trauma injury.

2 days ago | Likes 43 Dislikes 4

Brain stem, the thing you need to breathe.

2 days ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Gotta love armchair doctors analyzing a few seconds of video like they have the radiology department in front of them, or even know what they're talking about short of hearing "fencing pose" in passing.

2 days ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 44

Trauma doctor here. It's called "Decerebrate Posturing" (fencing pose is different) and your somewhat snide comment against the people saying, TBI over "a few seconds of video" is off the mark. That's a potentially mortal brain stem injury. It's obvious from the limbs, hands, and feet in the last couple of seconds of video.
Anybody who has taken first aid should recognize it, as well as fencing pose. Decorticate Pose can be more subtle, but those 2 are easy and obvious.

1 day ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

1. Fencing pose was said as its the usual reference people immediately say on stuff like this, hence the "in passing" part, as people repeat buzzwords they hear often.

2. Yes, armchair Imgur / reddit doctors diagnosing things off a few seconds of video is off the mark. There's a reason unlicensed / out of jurisdiction medical diagnosis is something actual doctors don't do, full stop.

3. There's a potential for basically anything here. Justifying a medical diagnosis from a few frames is poorly

22 hours ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Sense when do you need to be a doctor to determine

Head hit hard = brain not happy

2 days ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

Is he on here? Is he taking medical advice from imgur comments? Nobody is pretending to be a doctor here, just having a conversation.

2 days ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 4

This is decerebrate posturing which indicates a severe upper brain stem injury, not a fencing response.

One does not need to be a doctor to tell the difference, nor to recognize it for what it is.

2 days ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 2

Wait, what's the difference between decerebrate and fencing? I'm not familiar with decerebrate posture. I can go google it if you don't feel like trying to explain in 500 characters as well.

1 day ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Whatever you say bud, good to know telehealth has evolved to the point of diagnosis on 17 frames.

2 days ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 40

Look into the Glasgow Coma Scale, this could be a score of 3, worst possible score, already near dead, from 3-15. Heart and lungs might arest, be prepared to administer CPR.

1 day ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I have a little bit of formal education on this matter and a single still image of that involuntary, reflexive posture is frightening. If you see it get the subject immediate medical attention, that life might already be beyond saving but immediate intervention could be their only hope.
